Another compression test today same as last time. Did it hot too, exactly the same results and burnt fingers. Damn stop solenoid under the inlet manifold under the fuel screw. Can't find any injectors with out selling a kidney first. Went to Vaux dealer to get some injector washers. He said £7 odd so I said can I get the bottom crush washer too. He said £8, I thought that's not bad until he totaled it all up £97 I came out of there and drove the shit out of the car, up to the limiter every gear, so fed up. Got a mind to just fill it up with injector cleaner and scream the nuts off it now and just see if it lasts until December.

Your compression figures seem very good for a high mileage diesel engine. I expect that there is very little wrong with the mechanicals. Its more likely to be worn out injectors or an injection pump fault or possibly an air leak somewhere.
My dad had a green 1.7td n reg cav like yours was a cracking car. I also worked at a vauxhall dealer in 90s as an apprentice and these motors were always tappety when cold.

Still an on going concern Recon injectors were £70 + plus each so I opted for new nozzles and did them myself. You were right about the spill rail Lee. Thought it was going to snap but got it off in one piece. Not a hard job, just spend as much time as possible cleaning all around the injectors before you touch anything The old nozzles were a bit eroded but the injector internals looked good as new. Running much better, got wheel spin in 1st and 2nd now Still got the odd miss now and again so I'm taking the head off! £55 for a gen gasket and bolts from my trusty head place. If the bores are ok I'll get the head checked out. If the bores are fooked I'll lap the old valves in and stick it back on. For the MOT it needs half an offside sill £20 ish and I'll weld it myself. Needs two rear shocks, I can get genuine offline for £15 each and I want to change the 20 year old rear brake hoses £7 each. It all depends what I see when its old head comes off!

Paul get in touch with your local snap on dealer, they sell a combined compression/cylinder leak gauge tester that will accurately show how much leakage each cylinder has in comparison to the others without any dismantling. Test the cylinders stone cold and then again at normal operating temperature and compare the differences, and any deviation between cylinders. Your spending too much time and money on this old car, and might of only required an Italian tune up to clear the system out. When you have had enough of it, make sure you still have £100 for my engine and box LOL

When you have had enough of it, make sure you still have £100 for my engine and box LOL I am tempted by that engine you have harry and christmas is coming fast. I can see it all wrapped up nicely Thing is I've had this 9 years and it's given very few problems. The most I've ever spent on it in one go is £120 for an alternator and I only paid £700 odd for it I know the inlets are leaking so the head has to come off anyway. I mean 200k miles and 20 years isn't bad going for a head gasket. The rest of the car is solid apart from the os sill. I'll see what the bores are like. I can get engine parts pretty cheap from the head specialist I go too because his suppliers want rid of them as there is not much call for them these days. He'll check the head for free if I take it up. If the bores are worn to buggery I'll just run it until it gives out. I've not got the facilities these days for whipping engines out because I have to borrow the old mans garage and he's not going to want bits of car laying around, been there before lol.

The only Isuzu motor I've seen with knackered bores was driven with no water and was cooked. So if yours isn't consuming lots of oil then I reckon your bores are good. Given what you've done with the injectors recently, I think you've put yourself in a position now that, if you stop, you've lost. So the only way now is to keep going and avoid loosing what's already been spent. In for a penny, in for a pound!

Nearly sorted Rhubarb Head is off! Been reminded big time how much of a pain cars can be. Not stripped an engine like this for about 15 years and wont be doing it again!! Bores are ok, they are glazed though but not a scuff or scratch in sight considering that the air filter that collapsed wasn't sealing properly. Pistons are all good, first car I've stripped with no scuffing on the piston skirts and not coked up much either, rings are worn though, big ends are in pretty good nick. Head face is fine, valve seats weren't that bad but a lot of crud on the back of the inlets, exhausts were clean. Valve guides are fooked especially the exhausts, I reckon nearly 0.4 mill, think this is the main reason it was pressurizing the breather Never seen guides this bad before. It's off to the head place in the morning for bronze guide liners and he'll sort the seats and shims for £85 Yes I have gone and done it. I got new SM piston rings, FAI headset, ACL big ends, FAI cambelt and genuine Febi bolts for £142.80+vat. Cost me a fair bit in parts including the injector nozzles last month but what the hell. It's a solid car and I like it Can't wait to stick it all back together.

Still going strong and pulling hard now 210k miles but needs a new radiator. Cheapest I can find is £105!! Same radiator for the Isuzu engined Astra is £54, the only difference between the two is the positioning of the four plastic mounting lugs so I'm going to have to make some brackets or something. Picked up a load of cheap spares for it off ebay over the months as well. Blew the Alternator by connecting the battery charger the wrong way!! Couldn't believe it and electrics is my job fried the regulator so picked one up online and soldered it in last weekend, saved me £100 on a new Alt as the regulator was £20. It goes well running 21psi boost as well as I found out when the waste gate pipe split Going to spruce it up for the next MOT now, those testers are going to shit their knickers when they see it

The ready recknor on eBay said that the rad will do the Isuzu lump. Why don't you drop them a mail and ask them to confirm it is indeed the right one?
Oh, and the last time I bought a rad for a Cavalier TD was 10 years ago and it cost me £30 from Traynors in Armagh for a new one.
