Yeah, could have. Thing is how far do you go with it. 19 years old 200k I've had it 9 years and it's not cost me a lot over the years. Never broken down and starts first turn of the key. I don't intend spending much on it now, it's had it's day. I'll sort the clearances and see what happens, maybe swap injectors if I can get some but the head isn't coming off.

If your going to run it till it dies have the backs of the shims ground to size and enjoy the ride, although I cannot advise that you do it. Regards Upkeep

Cold start this morning. Ignore the oscillating video, it's the shaking I was trying to highlight She blows Engine hot but it absolutely pissed down so you can't hear the engine. Nothing coming out the dipstick or filler cap. Smoke when hot Can't smell burning oil as you normally would, just stinks of Diesel. She's overdue for an oil change and lost about 2mm from the top notch on the dipstick since last change.

There is a recon cylinder head on Ebay starting at £100, so far I'm resisting because knowing my luck I'll take the head off and find a buggered piston. Went to my cylinder head place the other day. They can't get shims either and they had a few heads but they'd nicked all the shims out of them. I hadn't been to this place for 16 years but it was exactly the same! The bloke even looked the same and I'm sure he had the same old overalls on

I think you've got to stand back and look at this logically... It's 18 years old, done a lot of miles and served you well.. You mentioned it's going to need some other work too, welding etc.. Any bits your source are going to bit of the same age and wear.. I think it's had it's day mate, you have to draw the line somewhere

I think it's had it's day mate, you have to draw the line somewhere I know your right Rhubarb So it has 5 months tax and test left, 4 nearly brand new tyres, new brakes. Body is absolutely solid apart from offside rear sill. MOT place said £100 for a full sill and less for patching. Not worried about the shocks, I can pick them up on Ebay. It still goes very well, no wafts of smoke in the mirror in fact I've seen newer cars pumping more shit than mine. I'll have a look around the breakers over the next few weeks. If I can find a good head with shims and injectors I'll try swopping bits about see what happens. I've not checked the turbo for play or the pipes for oil yet mind. I'm not going to spend silly money on it but at the same time can't afford to get a decent replacement yet. Guess I'll just wait and see what happens

If you can do the repairs yourself , I say keep the old girl going Any complete engines around ? In 24 years none of my cars have been to a garage other than for mots, tyres and tracking. I've rebuilt a few engines, have all the tools for the old stuff. Bore deglazers, piston ring compressors valve spring compressors even got an old digital exhaust gas analyzer (probably never use that again). I can strip gearboxes and weld. My welder is stuffed though. I recon the bottom end is ok Trouble is as I've got older my enthusiasm and patience has dropped. Couldn't get much smoke out of it today, still pulls from 1000rpm in 4th no trouble (I don't make a habit of that) just checking for smoke. Took it on the dual carriageway 20 mins ago with the sun behind me and all I could see was black and grey flat out, nothing on overrun but it does stink of diesel a bit more than usual I'll have a look around and see what I can find.

Ordered some shims today!!! Was offered some off a vaux dealer online but I would have to pay postage. Went down to the Ponty vaux dealers and he said nah, can't get them now. Pull out my slip of paper with the part numbers I want, Oh yeah we can order them in! £6 a shim, will take 7 days from Germany. Might whip the inlet and exhaust manifolds off to have a look at the back of the valves/stems and look for any oilage, sound like a plan? I can check the turbo then as well. Took it for a 20 mile wanging up the A470 , nothing wrong with it, nothing much out the back in the mirror even flat out up hill whizzing past everyone It'll pull over 100 easily. I'm determined to keep it now. Every week I can almost guarantee someone will stop me and say that's in good nick, don't see any off these any more and spend an hour chatting to a total stranger about old cars. Was talking to an old geezer last week with an 86 Polo estate Got the low down on a few local scrap yards and yards I didn't know existed. Needs a little bit of body work tidying, drivers door and wing from the bump a few years ago, new sill and a quick wheel rub down and spray. Took all the carpets out, no rust anywhere even in the boot, doors are solid. Everything electric works including the Ariel. Might see if I can get a second hand head for some spare injectors as well. Bet you all think I'm nuts

Had a few of these engines back in the day with symptoms likes yours had bent a rod.
If valve clearances doesn't sort it, get a compression check.

While searching the net I found a story of one of these with a bent rod after going through water. Ran for ages but wouldn't idle smooth, well as smooth as a diesel can be anyway. It's been at the back of my mind but I've done nothing as far as I know to bend a rod. I can't think what else would bend a rod? Been looking at diesel compression tester kits, blo*dy expensive compared to petrol.

Swapped out the worse shims today. Inlets are now .15 x2 and .10 x2 trouble is I need a 2.3 shim and the smallest I can get is a 2.35. Swapped Exhaust shims around and got them to .25mm. It idles smoother, I can tell just by sitting in the car, no shaky seat lol. Picks up quicker and the low rev jerkiness seems to have gone but I only took it for a short run. Engine is still rocking between 1000/1500 rpm with a slight intermittent miss which I recon is an injector Exhaust tone is steady and even. When I took it for a quick run down the dual carriageway a huge plume of greyish brown smoke came out. I'm going to see if I can get a spare head for injectors. How much is a compression test these days, anyone know? Is it worth me getting a gauge of my own even if it's a cheaper version. Could this engine rocking be made worse by a dodgy engine mount? I was going to replace the back one because I know they are tired. I can rock the engine by hand.I aint giving up on it yet , shims were only £13 so another £13 wont break the bank but I'd have to get them skimmed down.
