The old man's looking for a 3/4" hex socket set for work on tractors and the like. He's seen this: www.ebay.co.uk/itm/250819597018but I'm worried that it's a bit too cheap for the amount of force you'd be putting through the sockets. Any ideas/suggestions?

As 3/4 drive sockets go! I have loads and loads of black impact sockets, shallow and deep and what is left of a Britool chrome plated socket set.
I mostly use a 3/4 airgun not a ratchet.
Named make 3/4 drive socket sets are expensive. Lad at workshop has just bought a Bacho one for £200 ish.

Last time i priced a good set off one of the tools vans, Its was'nt cheap decided to leave it until i really need my own. I know the snap on stuff work has was mega money. That in the link looks like the other cheap set on ebay.

That ebay one wouldn't have done the job,i made the mistake of buying a sealey one last year turns out it was sealey's lesser brand of Siegen, wasn't happy but kept it anyway as still has sealey warranty but since buying i have had a new ractchet, and half a dozen new sockets, they split very easily no good for stubborn bolts, only good for light d.i.y.you really do get what you pay for with socket sets.

Its a 12 point with no ratchet but might be worth mentioning the 'life-time guarantee' Halfords Pro 3/4 set for some one. Shelf price is normally £199 but its often on offer for £99 and should be less on the trade card.
The breaker bar is only 475mm, probably a costing choice rather than a mistake, I suspect many folk buying this set will already own their own bar or scaffold pipe, or want to select their own whoppa bar. Equally theres no ratchet in the set, again I'm guessing this set is for cracking whoppas off, then winding em off with a 3/4-1/2 reducer.
Don't know the card price, hard to guess how much, some things are much less, others are a bit less. For example the popular 1/4 set is £50 on the shelf, often on offer at £25, but only £12.99 on the card. Whereas the 150 piece 1/2 set is £200 on shelf, usually on offer at £100, and about £95 on the card. So the 3/4 set could be a lot less, or a little less.
The 1/4 set makes a great gift at £12.99, ideal for friends, family, employees. I've bought loads of these as gifts over the years and everyone has been well chuffed. I've got 2, oldest is 15 years and still going strong !

The old man does a fair bit of work on tractors and the like where big nuts and bolts are the norm.
Also, when we tried to take a front hub nut off my 45 it snapped two 1/2" drive squares off. We had to borrow a big Britool 3/4" to shift it in the end.

I've got a Britool set - think it was a couple of hundred. I find the ratchets so heavy they are uncomfortable to use so I tend to only use the sockets when I need to wheel out a separate "whoppa" bar as Tom put it (3 1/2 foot I think) then switch to a reducer on a 1/2" ratchet.
I probably wouldn't use it at all if I had a bigger air gun but it's done a few bits on the land rovers and is almost essential for all but the smallest tractors.

Got a 3/4 Draper starter set on offer a few years back for £90, not managed to break anything yet but it only comes out to play when im struggling to shift something. The 3/4 breaker bar that ive got came from machine mart and was around £25 if i remember right

What does everyone use 3/4 stuff on ? As I don't have any thing that big and I've never needed too Transit wheel nuts, most crankshaft bolts, our 7.5ton recovery truck this list goes on! I have an inch drive I-Rand airgun as well, that's been out in our workshop for several crankshaft bolts. (I don't have many inch drive sockets thou)

I'll second that, try shifting a 24 valve or 12 valve for that senator crankshaft pulley bolt without a inch gun, no chance and at times it a hell of a struggle with that.

Best 3/4 impact gun I have ever used is a Facom NK.3000F
It has the power of a inch drive gun, 2115nm in reverse, but is short in length so you can get at crankshaft bolts on the like of BMW N42 engines and the like.
My friend who owns another garage has one, he paid £635 in a sale for it!
I have borrowed it a couple of times. Super tool far better then my Ingersol Rand 2925P1TI 3/4 gun.
Big airguns need 1/2 bore hoses.
On another note: I always have supplied 1/2 airguns for our workshops, they get too much use to expect the lads to buy them. Lads supply and use there own hand tools. All the big stuff, power tools and specialist stuff should be provided by the garage owner in my view. What is the expectation on tools in other garages (I live and work in bubble).

Air lines, torches, measuring equipment etc is payed for by the company, torque wrenches too But only the cheapo ones, so most have there own.
General workshop stuff jacks, press welder, angle grinder etc... Also supplied.
I take care of the automatic tool supply (from ford) mandatory stuff gets sent automatically new tools Come out with new models etc.. Just had a jacking support beam delivered over £440 And I know it will be used maybe once ?
We've just been given tablets to complete vehicle health checks on. Which are an improvement Over the old ones we had ( they do like to waste money on stuff like this )
