As we all know, it is very hard to get a bargain these days, but sometimes you strike gold. Mine was a 1996 BMW 318ti I brought 4 years ago. I had a friend who i worked with, who's son had this BMW for 3 months. It kept getting hot, so he replaced the thermostat, radiator pipes, water pump etc, and couldn't understand why it was messing about. I said it could be the head gasket, which i believed it could be (i never seen the car before). The next day his mum asked if i know anyone who'd want to buy it for £1000, I said it wasnt really worth that much, he called later and offered it to me for £300, and that night took my dad to see it, as i wanted a project to do. Wanted to lean how to do a head gasket, gave 200 for the car, took her home and stuck her in garage for the week. I went to check on her and noticed water dripping from the thermostat housing, I replaced the gasket on it, as it still had the old gasket on it. £5 later she ran almost perfect, apart from a bad un-even rev, which turned out to be the icv sphotos-c.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-ash3/24821_10150150609350117_224537_n.jpg[/img] sphotos-e.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-ash3/24821_10150150609355117_333929_n.jpg[/img] sphotos-f.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-ash3/24821_10150150609360117_7304336_n.jpg[/img]

has to be the Daewoo Leganza £1595 i paid, sold 18 month's later due to a house move, had a clutch 2 months after i brought it (paid for by the dealer),nothing else apart from sevicing and a set of tyre's,oh an exhaust downpipe, all that being normal wear n tear, was by far the best motorway car i ever owned, which i did a lot of motorway driving at that time, sold for £1000 for a quick sale, got written off 18 months later closley followed by the current Broom Transport, swapped my 07 c-max 2.0 auto, which was a bit bruised n battered, drove fine but was way too juicy on fuel, for a 54 plate Fabia Classic 1.2 for £1500 my way, the skoda is immaculate and drive's lovely

Either my 1st mk2 Rocco - £152 on fleabay unseen with 150k on it, and sold several years later for 300 (mistake!) Or the torpedo, which I managed to talk myself into 7 hundred and something off the screen price as it only had 1 week of test left. Failed on a wiper blade and pair of number plates

my current xantia 2.0 hdi. its a v reg lx model. bought it for 300 quid 4 years ago.chraged up the flat battery and its still ok!!!!! service, front pads and discs, front and rear spheres and wipers all round and some tyres is all ive done to it. oh and it had a bad electrical fault a couple of years ago,the fix was a rotton wire under front wire, think i might have posted the pics up at the time.the speedo under reads by 10mph ever since. its on 150k now!!! i fitted a tow bar to it 3 years ago and i use it to tow or A frame breakdowns in. the clutch is starting to go as is the gearbox and the a/c has never worked(compressor leaks)oh and now the clock looses the time!!!!! im gona miss this car when it finally packs up!!! its also very very economical im sure it does over 50mpg!!! oh the best thing i never wash it and its got lots of scuffs and stuff all over,NOBODY pulls out or cuts me up in this car!!!!! last year a fiesta went into the back,it got obliterated!!!!!!! i had a smallcrack in the back bumper!!!!! it was also used as a rubbish van when the house was being done up!!!!never been the same since!!!!

That's why I ended up with the caddy. I was persuaded that I needed a van as I trashed my cars.by treating them like a van. Cracking little motor that was, but I wish I'd either kept it or not bought it. Lost way too much on that

Mine has to be my last car, which was a 2000/W Rover 45. I traded a troublesome Alfa 146 in on it and ran the thing for three years and near on 60,000 miles. Aside from component wear and the odd failure it simply got on with my 50 mile commute.

hi my 55 reg mk5 golf was a bargain price at £3500 its a sdi non turbo, it had 127k on clock was in great condition. It was just 4 years old, needed brakes alround straight away, one front top strut bolts were just about off the threads, it just rattled about. In a few months over 3 years, we've done another 40k, its in great condition now, would drive it across europe without thinking. Had to have gearbox reconditioned, put new clutch in , that cost me £500 and a new radiator. Its still worth £2k. Starts on the button, wouldn't swap if for tdi, happy to drive it I don't need the acceleration. Easy to work on, just done the engine mounts, doesn't shake at tickover that it used to and gear changes don't move the engine about. Great design and dynamically, not as good build quality as some people think.

I've had lots of cheapies, but I think the best buy I had was my Toyota Corolla. Bought at 6 years old for £2500, owned it for 11 years, and apart from servicing and tyres, I replaced the clutch(£75) and the radiator(£100). It never let me down, eventually the steering lock broke, couldn't find another, sold to a young lad for £300.

Suppose the two best bargains I got are the Granada MK 11 2.8i Ghia X estate I had years ago paid £1600 ish for it ran it 2-3 years and sold it for £3295 to a railway Engineer. Wouldn't mind buying it back as I did a search a few months ago and it's still on the road somewhere in the UK. ( Might investigate further) providing DVLA will tell me what I want to know? The other was a non running Mark 111 Granny 24v Cossie I took a risk on and it worked out.

Actually the Stag was bought as a toy but has turned out to be quite a bargain. Bought for 2K with no engine but recent respray and all welding done, all new suspension and brakes etc. Stuck Rover 3.9 and matching SD1 box in which cost about £800 quid after I'd finished playing with the engine and done nothing to it since except oil and filter once a year. I've now done 30k in it, always goes first time even after 6 month winter slumber, and on agreed value policy of £6k

I've had a few in my time: Rover 825 Sterling, bought for £200, knackered by a local garage for £700 and paid out on their insurance £1,600 Rover 827: Advertised for £1,000 in Auto Trader, had a screen sticker for £2,000. I agreed to pay the £1,000 so they took me to the bank for the cash and by the time I got back the lot manager said the price was £1,250 I walked and they came chasing after me, as I'd walked off the lot I said the price was now £850. I drove it away for that ;D Pug 306, (basic 4 door one), bought on a whim for £75, ran for a year, tyres were £75, bits and bobs to service it £75, back then a years road tax was £75 and I sold it for ..... Yep! £75! Jaguar Series III 2.8 - Advertised for £1,600, then re-advertised for £1,000. It went down to £850 and I bought it for £250! The seller called me a f*cking burglar The current 7 Series 728i, on Ebay bidding was at £550, he wanted a grand for it and I knocked him down to £650. And the moral of this? Don't negotiate with me as you'll always come worse off ;D ;D
