My mother's Yaris hybrid uses the single filament HIR2 type halogen bulbs in its headlamps. The lights on the car are pretty rubbish, so I was wondering what the best replacement bulbs are in that size/fittment? Normally I'd grab something like Osram Nighbreakers, but they don't come in that size.

Thanks, I'll have a word with the folks and see what they want to do. Only issue I can see is we'd need to swap the bulbs out for Halogens at MOT time as the car's not got headlamp washers or auto self-levelling.

lenses and the reflectors in good nick? led, dazzle everyone! aaarrgghhh Its a 2017 plate car, so the lamps themselves are fine, but the beam pattern is just terrible. It lights up a "splodge" about 15 yards directly in front of the car and there's no spread at all. It doesn't help that the headlamp itself has a mechanical shutter for main/dip, so you can't even wire in a light bar!

They're a twist-fit with a fixed plastic base, so you'd have to be very bad at the job to put them in wrong. Knowing how bad I am, I have checked that a few times!

... It doesn't help that the headlamp itself has a mechanical shutter for main/dip, so you can't even wire in a light bar! Yes you can... the shutter is triggered upwards by a high beam input, use that to switch a relay - I've successfully done that with many 'Bi-Xenon' equipped LR's - and about to do with another! The 'splodge' doesn't sound right, have you access to a beamsetter?

The 'splodge' doesn't sound right, have you access to a beamsetter? I've probably not described it well, but in short the lights have poor performance from the factory. It just doesn't have the "spread" of light you need for making progress on a dark country lane. From what we can tell the lamps are correctly set and pass an MOT but are generally rubbish. Good shout with the relay off the shutter input. If the folks keep the car long term we might look in to a subtle LED add on unit

I'm sure it isn't this.... The last 'poor headlights' job I looked at, the light switch was in the off position and they were permanently running on DRL's - which are really annoying at night as there's little light position control.

The HIR2 bases are set-up in such a way as you can't put them in upside down They fit straight in to the back of the headlamp and I can't see how it would go in 180 degrees out, and I don't think the wiring connectors would reach around either. I'll double check it next time I see the car but I don't think its upside down bulbs, but rather how the projector units are designed.

Seen that plenty of times!
