Bit of a thought experiment/mild argument starter this...
You've got a normal common or garden FWD car, and it needs 2x new tyres.
Do the new tyres go on the front axle? Or the rear axle?
IMO the new ones always go on the front, as that's the end of the car that's doing pretty much all of the work, and the rear axle is basically there to stop the bumper from scraping on the ground
However "official" advice is to stick new tyres on the back so that if you do something dumb the rear end doesn't swing around.

Rear, in wet / slippy conditions the rear breaking away is very difficult to control / recover. If the front loses grip its a natural reaction to wind on more lock while braking / reducing speed until the tyres grip again (even hitting a kerb / grassy bank with the front tyres will help reduce speed).

Most people just replace the ones that are worn out - i.e. the front ones, it's not uncommon to have significantly older tyres on the rear compared to the front ones. Although it's the 'proper' way of doing things, we've never had anyone request new on the rear when the fronts need changing, nor have we suggested it. TBH, if someone's driving is bad enough to get the rear stepping out, they need more help than tyre tread depth....

I think in a previous reply to a thread, I put the new tyres on the front, the rear axle having the older 2 of the 4…..but that raised a few comments… I can’t recall in my lifetime thus far why the older tyres went on the back….

The way I see it is if you're hammering about enough to risk the back end breaking loose then you really need all the steering and braking you can get. Putting the best tyres on the back means you're just going to understeer in to whatever you hit.

This old chestnut was banded about by the likes of Kwik Fit and ATS a few years back.
They said new ones on rear..
If you put new tyres on the front and then the rear steps out you're either driving like a knob or the tyres are old/hard/worn.

I've just spent £1100 on four tyres, the old ones were three Falken with 4.5mm tread and an Accelera with 6mm... I'm not keen on budget tyres keeping around 2.5tonnes where I want it to be and TBH I'd be changing them at a minimum of 3.5mm anyway.

With mine I'm stuck with a motley crew of tyres for a while on the Smolvo
The back pair are Pirelli Cinturatos from about 2018. Tread's good but they are getting on a bit
Front left is a "Roadstone", fitted last November for the MOT (I'm guessing), decent tread
Front right is a Falken that the Volvo dealer put on after a coil spring speared the other Roadstone in May
At this rate I'll always have one tyre that's newer than the rest!

I tend to change my car when the tyres become worn, or the ashtray gets full…..

What I'll probably end up doing is replacing the pirellis first, stick the new ones on the front and then get two decent tyres when the roadstone and falken run down.

Nope - tyres are through one of the tyre distributors, prices are absolutely crazy! it would have cost me £335 a tyre to get them through work - they put on £5 a tyre. It was £1103 through National tyres (Halfords) with a 15% online discount and free fitting - now given we don't actually have a trained tyre fitter, the machines are old & worn and I had a set of new rims too, it seemed the best option to let the Halfords van come round and fit them for me - easy job for them, no car to jack up and no old tyres to tear off the rims & dispose of!
