I don't know how accurate it was but I downloaded an decibel meter app on my iphone. The reason being I had just bought a 1972 VW Beetle, 1600 on twin carb, J-tubes and so nasty backbox hanging out the back. It was so loud it was horrid. According to the app, it was 98db whilst driving.... from the passenger seat with the windows closed I spend a couple hundred quid on a more sensible exhaust, added some of the tin-wear and seals that were missing and it dropped to 94db It was a cool car, but my wife refused and kids refused to go in it and my dogs were terrified of it. Needless to say I had to sell it, luckily I made a profit. I owned it before they moved the MOT exemption on, so I still had to have an MOT on it, no issues .... not noise related anyway. Why didn't you source and fit a standard type exhaust?

Why didn't you source and fit a standard type exhaust? Simple answer is cost. To refit a standard exhaust I would have ideally needed to also refit heat exchangers which would have added significantly to the cost. Even pattern parts in mild-steel added up to more than an aftermarket Stainless sports exhaust. I would have then also needed to have ensured the heating system was properly re-commissioned, channels, tubes, cable controls etc. If the car had been a keeper I would have gone down the route, but it was only ever intended as short term project for me to tidy up and move on. Plus the system I fitted looked cool and fitted with the general styling of the car and hoped (naively) that it might had been quieter. Attachment Deleted

Anyway boys and girls,I tried to reduce the noise by purchasing another silencer for the back box aswell as more tubing that was delayed by DPD for 3 weeks...so it's been aggro. I decided to buy a used standard exhaust which is on it now and had another MOT today which has failed on the front brakes..."imbalanced across an axle 41%"...but that could be,because it hasn't been used since November last year.
