I’m fairly certain these ones came from the Far East. Possibly a common fix there. I feel a bit guilty for not getting them from a local motor factors, but what used to be our good one has been taken over and is a bit lame now. You also end up queuing behind half wits and pi$$ takers - buying a single sidelight bulb then asking if they can have a pair of latex gloves and be shown how to change it themselves! Oli Curious: What size are the olives? As in, do they fit the brake or fuel pipe? They seem to be the usual 3/16” (I thought brake pipe was 5mm until I googled it - seems it’s actually 4.75mm) I’m not aware of any cars using fuel line that tiny. I only used it in the past for a small auxiliary heater as it seemed to match what it came with. Fuel line starts at about 10mm doesn’t it? I might try one on a scrap piece of steel and copper pipe to see how well they grip and how much they deform the pipe. Sadly I don’t have any (safe!) way of pressure testing it. Oli

Oli That's a pukka method for the Chinese/Asian/Indian market of repairing brake pipe then! Fuel pipe I think starts at 6mm upwards.

Last time I went to a 'motor factors' it was full of eastern-europeans wanting to exchange the bits they bought the day before for the correct parts, taliban taxi-drivers wanting the cheapest parts they had, but with the non-existent 'taxi discount' and spotty oiks just wanting to discuss the options available for lowered suspension & hub spacers on their nan's VW Up! - without actually wanting to buy anything and with no regard to the queue building behind them.... That was 2019, it's probably the same now. I tend to buy from dealers, costs a bit more but they'll deliver to work and it's (usually) the right part with a parts & labour warranty.
It is 2022 and nothing has changed mate.

The Volvo dealers I worked at was a small place, only five bays and one door in & out, there was a scruffy, miserable old fart (think Wesley off of LotSW but without the humour) who used to park his rotten, leaky old shed of a Volvo in the doorway and kept asking for 'advice' on how to do something, then say something along the lines of 'Oh, I'll never manage that, could you help me out' - for free of course.... same applied for nuts, bolts, fuses, bulbs, connectors etc. etc.
I'd been told about this particular parasite, a couple of the techs would help him out, just to get rid of him.
About five weeks after I started, he abandoned his wreck in the doorway and started with his whining, I told him he couldn't park there as he was blocking the workshop and if he wanted it looked at to park it at the front and book it in.... his basic response was 'I'm not paying those prices! and it won't start so you need to take a look'. My response:- 'you see that Land Rover over there? the one with the winch on? well you've got the time it takes for me to walk over to it to move your shed otherwise I'll move it for you, all the way to the scrappers' as I picked up my keys and started walking to the back of the car park.... never saw him again
Did I mention I hate spongers?

Someone mentioned "taxi trade discount" above.
Nothing winds me up more than this. When I am asked for it/this - I turn from a well adjusted middle aged chap - into a "rabid dog" in micro seconds.
Then there is warranty on taxi repairs - you get a car with two drivers (day and night shifts). They can do 100k in a year. They want 12 months warranty. I only warrant repairs on taxis for 10.000miles. They are not retail customers - they have no consumer rights - it is business to business - it is just contract law in my mind.
Most big taxi firms now - have there own fitters and workshops.
--------------
The local Asian lad who repairs the growing batch of Asian owned taxis in the area - looks ill - like he is losing weight. He is actually a nice lad (he sometimes borrows tools and timing kits from us and always returns them). But he is owed so much money he can't afford to eat we think!
