we being one of my guys, not 1 just did one on a 12 plate punto, thought we were going to have to take the doors off to get the crash safety frame out, first one we've ever done, hopefully the last, don't care what icme says, i do a job like that on my terms. it was damp & crusty in it's lower corner, only visible once removed. regarding hi or low side nitrogen testing i have a couple of digital manifolds, one for each gas (saves changing hoses about & sub £100 on ebay nowadays) i normally test between 12-15 bar using the high side where possible as that what it could easily get to, sniffers - never had much luck with them & i have several, tried electronic ears (stethoscope) about as fruitful. uv light some success, mostly fairy liquid mix in a squirter bottle, nearly always condensors, but sometimes you get lucky

You'd be better off (IMO) with a manifold set and the R1234YF connectors, you 'see' things the digital gauges won't show, like pulsing, which is a sign of a compressor on it's way out.

It's a manifold with digital guages www.ebay.co.uk/itm/124639114052?hash=item1d0511f344:g:V2AAAOSw~QdgUX8qi have a couple for the different couplings, saves swapping hoses about & inducing leaks on the joints, regarding the pulsing you can read the data but as i always observe the pressures before & after while hooked up to the machine that's the same thing really, for observing a slow leak i find digital far easier to read rather than looking at a needle which can give the impression of a different reading depending on the angle of your head while looking at it, no missing a dropping digital reading just my own experiences gained over the years, no right or wrong

I'd agree that the digital ones would be easier to detect a small pressure drop with, although there's a danger of mistaking a pressure drop due to the temperature also dropping with there being a leak - that also applies to analogue gauges though. I'm not sure that the sampling or display refresh would be fast enough to show some of the problems you can pick up by watching an analogue gauge 'trembling' as the RCV starts to stick, for example. As you say, whatever works for you, no right or wrong.

Another one! Diagnosis was straight forward this time, sniffer around the condensate drain confirmed a leaking evaporator, along with the slightly milky condensate (the system was still working, just) running down the side of the gearbox. this is on a 'v class' i.e. a van with extra seats, we try and dissuade them from coming here as they're a PITA to work on.
A couple of months ago, I read something about PAG oil becoming acidic when used with R1234yf, I can't find the article again but this might explain these two failures if they're in the habit of forcing the aircon off in cold weather, possibly.....
