Sounds like it's either not charging or it's mechanically 'tightening up' - is it OK once it's cooled? i went back for it expecting to have to jump start it but it started 2nd turn of the key turning over like nothing was wrong

You would really need the car in a failed state. Ideally use a test light but failing that a volt meter at the ignition switch feed in from the battery. With the ign off I suspect only one wire will be at 12.7v (assuming good battery), test between that pin and ground and turn on the ign/try to crank and make sure it stays at around 12.7v- if anything is happening it may drop a little but you are watching for it to drop right down. If it does you have a bad connection between B+ and that pin on the ign switch. If it stopped whilst running as you said then I would not bother testing the starter.
ive got my suspicion could be the ignition switch at fault but thats only cos i noticed the ignition lights dont allways come on i did lightly wack the ignition while it was running and it cut out to not had much time to look yet

Battery terminals ok? Chassis earth and engine earth ok? If you’ve painted the engine / gearboxes you might have stopped the starter earthing with the paint yep checked all that even added an extra earth to the engine i even made sure to grind the paint back on the earth on the gearbox before i fitted it Same with the alternator? My MK2 Cavalier alternator had its own earth strap. How's the clutch? A poor earth can lead to the clutch inner cable welding itself to the outer due to arcing inside, eventually leading to the cable to fray or seizing completely - a friends Chevette had 3 cables before we realised what was happening

Christ - now you've giving me proper flashbacks to things I don't want to remember!

Sounds like it's either not charging or it's mechanically 'tightening up' - is it OK once it's cooled? This is what it sounds like from this end of the UK - hence the reason I suggested trying to turn it over by hand when it cuts-out spud
I would see how easy it is to turn by hand cold, then take it out for a run, and see if it appears to get harder to turn - even if it doesn't actually cut-out. A "torque-to-turn" with a torque-wrench would be the ultimate test here, but you would gauge a reasonable amount from just turning the engine by hand with a ratchet-drive and socket.

Just re-winding a while here:
Did you sort out the hot non start issue prior to this problem?
Because I'm sat here thinking timing..
