Anybody got a recommendation for a decent "coil on plug probe" for oscilloscopes? I've been using an old modified relay (resistor removed) for years, but fancy a real one. Do I just bite the bullet and buy the Pico version?? I bought the picoscope COP probe (blue handle) - think I paid about £150 for it. I also got a orange handled one with no name off ebay - this works about the same (don't ask me for the link - I have had it for years). I have also got a pulse pickup for COP from an expensive aging CZ Synco timing light set - I use - this kits does diesel pulse as well by a peizo clamp that goes round the injector pipe. Not used the timing light for years thou! ----------- To be honest in reality I have not used either COP probes much.
Seen to only use an amp clamp on a scope nowadays!
Unlike wrightsparx - I seem to use other bits of kit - not just a scope (joke don't bite!)Trouble with our job now is time, I just need to make a quick assessment and then move on,stripping enough stuff away to get a current clamp on a coil or injector takes way too long on modern cars. I just need non intrusive tests to determine if it's even worth attempting a roadside repair.

How well equipped is "roadside van" now. Once saw a picture of an RAC van unloaded - all the gear layed out - looked fairly impressive to me - or do they just buy the wrong gear? I am interested in this...?

They supply the vehicle, the towing equipment, and the breakdown jobs The more jobs I complete without towing myself or calling out a tow truck, and the more parts I install to complete a repair the more money I earn

I'll have you know I have just as many test-lights as oscilloscopes
Talking of which trickydicky did you get the meter/scope combo ? er... asking for a friend...

I did buy one from Amazon, sold one of my old ones for £75 so got less than a ton in the Owon HDS272s so far, having a bit of a rehash of my probes and accessories to build a new roadside kit (again). Being a bit of a tightwad I have done some research and decided to build my own COP probe out of existing parts and a few bits from WTS. Hopefully will be complete this week just need a suitable case now if you have any suggestions?? Not had much chance to play with it yet but fairly impressed with it out of the box.

I stumbled across this site (WTS sell some of his stuff in the UK), sells some interesting 3d printed stuff for scope diag kits www.jarheaddiag.com/

I used 40mm solvent weld straight couplings and 2x access plugs as end caps - get the flat ones from screwstation. that gives you a robust handle/container
Cop (to the Gadgets PL recipe) , exhaust pressure and sound, then a power pack that didn't work out. On these I used recessed endcaps - don't do that as you cant get easy access to the BNC. All of this has now been replaced with Rotkee stuff.

Oh wow, it's like a new scan tool ! ... But only £3 A screen protector for the Autel, I left the original one on there and did not realise how grubby it was until I replaced it.

Yea Bernie Thompson is something else. Though he makes it look easy the software on his kit always looks a bit clunky to me as it is written in Labview I believe. Especially compared with Picoscope 7.
He has an interesting approach where he'll put all 8 channels on a car and immediately see which one is the issue. I learned a lot about using VE from one of his videos and have one of the calc apps on my phone. His ability on drive-ability issues is amazing.

I think I have found a perfect solution to my COP probe search!! Seen him use this GTC505m quite a few times for fast misfire diagnostics and it appears to be a winner, also current ramps the coils and other unintrusive tests. youtu.be/AoZ_q5dMvFI
