The oil might have preserved it really well. I'm hoping that the little AVF unit has had an incontinent turbo-drain or feed, as that will have sprayed plenty of oil down that side of the frame. Then again, no VAG diesel unit is exactly oil-tight on the induction circuit, so it might just have had a blown intercooler hose from the compressor outlet, and that would preserve things very well...

The final outcome of this purchase was that the oil has preserved it perfectly. I haven't fully unwrapped it all, yet, as it turned-up before Xmas, but it looks better than I could have hoped, and definitely a means to fixing this Passat.

I did this job today, and having unwrapped the subframe properly, it is even better than I had hoped-for. Well preserved inside and out with oil, and a perfect fit for the car, so I can confirm that early and late B5 Passats have a common subframe.
The job is an absolute cinch to do, and the longest part of the preparation was the engine support beam; the engine is longitudinal, but the beam is transverse across the engine-bay, so a spreader-bar is needed to lift the two engine eyes safely from a single support-beam hook. Trouble is, there is not much vertical height to work-with, so all the lifting chains, etc, have to be short. Once set up, I reckon about an hour to remove the subframe and drop it away from the car.
The subframe was easy, but after that.......let's just say that I have had enough of this car by tonight......because I elected to change the sump whilst the subframe was off. All went well until I dropped the sump down, at which point I broke the rear main oil seal carrier by unwittingly leaving the two set-screws (hidden behind the flywheel when you look up through the access-holes at the back of the sump) still fastened to the sump I was trying to lever off the gasket/sealant at the base of the 'block. The repair is temporary whilst I await a new carrier, but the car needed a new seal anyway as it has been leaking for nearly 3years now, and the seal has gone brittle (as I found in the broken-off bit of carrier......).
To add insult to injury, it turns-out that the new F/N/S lower front track-control arm from a certain factors in the SE of England that I love to hate at the moment.....had supplied the wrong blinking arm for this car - it was for an Audi A4, with a different hub-carrier to the Passat, so the cone diameter on the swivel-joint is different (Passat is circa 20mm, Audi much bigger).
So the subframe has been left moderately loose for the time-being, as it is likely to need to come back off in a week-or-so when the new seal, clutch-kit, and track-control arm turn-up from another factors altogether....as the job of removing the gearbox looks much easier with the 'frame out of the way than with it in-situ, and the time to remove it is trivial.
