There was talk of this being canned this year, i.e. we all stay on BST.
Has that disappeared again?

Not heard a thing about staying on BST. I live in the South of England and don't work in agriculture - my thoughts are and always been to stay on BST (British Summer Time). But the people in the north - thats you Valhalla... Changing the clocks must have more benefit for you - than us in the South. Remind me....? Which island do you live on - I will look on Google maps and see the latitude in relation to other northern countries. Get a feel for it.... -------------------- A bit of history: Changing the time from summer to winter was started in 1916 as a knee jerk reaction to Germany doing it as they claimed it would help the war effort . So without much debate or any science involved, we in the UK - did it too...

The Isle of Skye is a long way North, but it's also further West than anywhere on the UK Mainland, so the longitude works back in our favour.
BST would suit us fine; we work a late start and finish on the shop, and it's the onset of darkness in the evenings that affects whether people stay out or not - and that means whether they come out to the shop or not.... It is generally the case that dark evenings here cause more serious/fatal road accidents than gloomy mornings, as the general public drive like they have the devil on their tail to get home before the dark sets-in in the evenings. The roads are so poorly marked, let alone cateyes, that you need headlamps like WW2 searchlamps to see the edges.
All the old arguments about schoolkids going off in the mornings in the darkness, holds little relevence when they hardly go to school at-all these days!
One final thought - I have always wondered why Vauxhalls were so popular in Scotland, until I drove my little Astra-G, then I realised that of all the little things that they "just get right", decent headlamps is one of them, and the penny dropped at that point. At 19years old, the headlamps on this little banger outperform the overated and underperforming "glow-worms on overtime" that adorn the fronts of so-called modern transport, especially on rural roads.

People seem to have forgotten that this was tried once before. It was about 1969 or 1970 and they left the clocks on "Summer Time" for the whole winter. It worked pretty well but the biggest complaint was about children going to school in the dark so they went back to the old winter/summer time change system. Of course that would not matter to the children of the present day because they all go to school by bus or 4x4.
The "Summer Time" system suited me because I was on a 25 mile commute at the time and I did not mind tackling the dark roads in the morning when I was fresh. However, in the evenings I had to tackle the same roads while I was feeling like a zomby after a day in the office, So it suited me to have some brightness left in the day thanks to summer time.
