I've come close to killing a multimeter. I managed to leave one of the Flukes outside in the rain for 48hours, after doing a remote job on a van that wouldn't fit through the workshop doorway. By the time I found it, it was fairly well filled-up. I could tell it was fairly well filled-up, as the water was sloshing through the display when I picked it up.
This was my epiphany. "Don't buy expensive meters that are over-spec'd for the job, then leave them outside. Buy cheap meters for that exercise."
The Fluke came back to life, but the alarm sounder has never worked since.

I suspect I'm not the only one to have done the same thing. I wasn't so lucky and killed mine. It had served me well and was one of my first bits of car kit. I don't know why I got something so complicated - the auto ranging was a pest and God only knows why I wanted one with a dwell setting - shows how little I knew at the time! Now replaced with two cheapie ones!

To be honest - I have a bit of thing about buying multimeters. I only in the last few days been looking at pen type meters to purchase. Do I need counselling for my addiction....? ![:-X](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/lipssealed.png)

I bought a cheap RS multimeter a couple of weeks ago. It doesn't do much, except DC voltage/current, and AC voltage, and resistance to about 10kOhm, and finally a continuity and diode test function. It was £16+VAT, delivered to the door. In other words, cheaper than the silicon leads I needed from Fluke for one of their meters (£24+VAT).
As far as I can correlate the thing, it does everything close enough for what I need for remote jobs and outside the workshop, and there's little risk of it breaking-the-bank if it gets dropped/run-over/soaked/eaten-by-dog, etc. etc.
