I serviced this Mini last May and that was the first time I had ever seen the car, so no history. The local BMW MINI dealer had completed the last inspection to the car as I was advised, they said that an oil leak from a VANOS solenoid was present but when I inspected them I could not find the leak. The customer gave me the written document that BMW MINI had produced so I took that along to the dealer and the parts department could not identify the part required!
A mechanic walked into the parts department at that time and he identified what was required, luckily he knew what I needed as I nearly left the dealership no wiser!
I can't remember the exact name of the part now, but it is a wiring harness with a bung that fits into the lower rear face of the cylinder block behind the driveshaft, which must be removed to fit it. I was told by both the workshop mechanic and the instructions to leave the old wiring connected and push it down into the sump area along with the new wiring connected to it. I was a bit concerned but the mechanic said they do it all the time at BMW. That job was done last year and has been OK since, but at that time I also changed the engine oil, thinking nothing about it, just routine servicing.
Some confusion between BMW workshop and reception probably occurred as the workshop identified that the brake pads were ready for renewal, the repair/advice sheet my customer told me said the front brakes required renewal. I inspected them and found nothing wrong, advised the customer and he came back to me and said BMW said they required changing so for his piece of mind would I change them, so I removed perfectly good brakes and put new ones on in their place.
About a month later the customer advises the instrument display brake warning lamp has illuminated!
I checked the brakes found nothing wrong and then decided, never having seen the paperwork from BMW via my customer that somebody must be reading something wrong, or an admin mistake had been made. Upon checking the rear brakes I found that the pads were ready for renewal.
I changed the pads, had fun resetting the dash warning system, and eventual returned his car. (That is the history I know of the car and dealer)
The customer came back and asked me to service his car last week. I first looked at the mileage since last years service, the car has completed nothing more than 4000 miles.
Upon draining the engine oil I found 2 litres of oil removed, where then had the remaining 2.2 litres gone in four thousand miles from last year?
So there is a problem with the engine somewhere, no smoke emitted from the tail pipe as can be seen, no oil leaks, so I suspect;
Can anybody shed any light on this subject?
Thank you

- Software update might be required?
- PVC system not working correctly
- Vacuum is being created and the turbo at low speed is not producing a problem, but at higher speeds might be passing oil into the cylinders and burning it off?
Can anybody shed any light on this subject?
