def worth recharging battery or fitting a new one just to prove a point. reno cars use digital electronic to start and run the car and they dont like low voltages!!! Ok recharged battery. Engine started momentarily, ran lumpy and clickety (like tappets ) and then cut out and now won't restart all. It spins very fast. However there's no sound of a fuel pump running and no smell of fuel under bonnet. Rev counter lifts during cranking so am suspecting that crank sensor is ok. Do these have a fuel inertia cut off switch somewhere just in case it got disturbed at some stage?

get them plugs out and check them. put some oil into bores and try again, make sure plugs aint wet. check the engine oil level! its not looking good for the car is it!!!! might be a loosing battle with this one,oh well its had 9 good years so not bad!!! its worth spending more than 500 onit, its only gona have other things going wrong with it.

I really think it needs a compression test before you go any further...

Indeed it is Confirmed spark and fueling ok. Got a mate to drop by with a compression tester and there's no compression to speak off . In his words, the engine is royally fooked. The owner is now looking at another Laguna, albeit a newer one with half leather, more bells and whistles, and probably just as much to go wrong as the old one... Thanks to all here for your advice and happy new year to you

It will probably only be some bent valves so not proper fooked but a proper repair will still be £500-600 if i were quoting it.

Well, its the owners call! As we're in good old rip off Ireland, the cost in Euro's would be around ~ €750 min to do the head. Plus the alternator is also goosed and the offside window regulator is also bunched. Fixing all this on a now 11 year old motor which is at best work €1200 makes the decision to scrap it more justifiable. Anyway, if it were my motor, I'd repair it just for the craic and the fun of it....
