Good answer autotech And your quite right nobs , most cars do have high level stop lamps as standard fitment now a days But like lots of the mot it is very outdated and can take years for amendments to become law IMO the MOT test needs a severe overhaul. Oh hang on a minute that'll put the price of MOT'S up won't it. As you were. It has gone through some major changes within the last few years peter. Always going to be a delay between vehicle tech and standard equipment For example DRL ( day time running lamps ) are not testable at present TPS ( tyre pressure monitoring) now testable item for 2012 model year onwards

Many thanks for all the clarifications. I think I understand the situation now, however I have enough time to get a bulb into this car before its MoT is due - it takes about 90seconds to access and change the bulb, so not a big problem to drop-in on the owner and fit the bulb when it arrives. According to my stock-list from the last year, there should be 8 of these bulbs somewhere in my collection.....I can see how you might need to get around the MoT requirements on some cars where the LED cluster is "fit and forget", i.e. not servicable, and therefore impossible to get the car through any other way than removing completely or pulling the harness. You have stock lists for bulbs in your workshop!I have a wall rack full of them, plus two drawers full of odd ones! But I too go caught out with a huge Merc sprinter capless in orange last week!

Anal as it sounds, when I buy these fiddly bits of consumables, like bulbs for instrument panels that are easy to loose, what I do is put them on a spreadsheet at the same time as I account for them in my financial sheets, so that when I get to the end of the year, I remember to include them on the "stock" , otherwise they just get forgotten at the bottom of a drawer. If I cannot find them, I guess how many I have used, then account for the remainder.....

Vahalla has my full respect!
Any man who has a car repair workshop and has time to catalogue stock of consumables.
Has mastered the job better than I have!
Most days I have trouble finding time for a p*ss!

I thought I was doing well by keeping a record of all purchases of consumables and checking the cost per year against the last year etc.
With things like bulbs, clips etc I try to charge for every 1 I use, but I know I dont!
