if it was made with it must have it for mot. In this case yes, due to it's age, but there are several cars that had cats fitted that didn't need them...Early Vauxhall Calibras for example.

When I had my Vauxhall Senator 24V back in the early 1990's it had two cats fitted from new but as it was a "H" reg 1990 model didn't come under cat rules I believe.

Also, if a car's had the engine swapped then the emissions test goes on the age of the engine, not the car

If its K-reg or later then it does need a CAT. K-reg on Metros certainly do.

I would double check that minimatt as I was under the impression a vehicle first used from August 1992 has to have a Cat test. Could one of the Forum testers clarify this please.

Its not had to have a cat test in the last 12 years,i think there are some excemptions, a freind has a mini with a carb amd a cat on an m reg (coopers got injection in 91 all others in 94 ish)i think his has to have a cat test but as it is an odd set up and difficult to pass the testers let it through, with mine i think from memory there is some sort of note on the paperwork when it is entered in for the test to say it is excempt, not being a tester myself or even in the trade anymore i cant clarify.

Read the notes from vosa
You need an exact match from emissions data book/gas analyzer
Are you really going to find an engine code on an 20+ year old car , don't think so
Tested an old transit camper van a few years ago on an m reg to non cat limits

Thanks guys, I appreciate all the comments on this.
The outcome was: I booked it in for a Stainless Steel backbox from Longlife, they have a local franchise so was handy and I'd heard nothing but good things so although a big outlay I thought it was an investment if we're keeping the car, which is the intention.
When I called up to book it in they confirmed the price on the back box of £200 not the £300 they'd quoted by email that was a typo - phew!
However when the started fitting it they found the cat was split and rattling too. In the first instance they offered to weld it up and make good so I knew they weren't out to rip me off, I'd also been aware of some other unidentified rattling so that solves that one.
So the credit card got a pounding and they fitted a new stainless Cat and connecting pipe too. As they make them on the car to order and they only originally had it booked in for the back box they ran out of time after this, so it's going back in sometime* to also have the downpipes to cat replaced with stainless too. This has been welded previous, I noticed this the other week when I was under the car fitting a clutch (that's another story!) so it makes sense to complete the full system.
So the car now has a Cat, with a lifetime warranty so I'll be sorted, legal and hopefully MOT-able for many years to come. And lesson learned, if I ever buy another retro classic I'll make sure is a pre '91 model.
* Side note: It was going back in for the Downpipes tomorrow but I had to postpone as I'm needing to use the BMW at the mo. If you follow my other threads my k-jet Mk2 Golf has failed me again and I've resigned to the fact I'm out of my depth. The garage that did the exhaust, are not only a Longlife franchise, they're also InterPro in Bristol, an old skool tuner from the height or Max-Power era. They've got a guy there that know the ins and outs of a K-jet and has been tuning them for years. They still have a regular flock of XR3/4 and VW and Audi etc. through there shutters. And my cars lined up waiting for the 'guru' to have some time to take a look.
Hopefully the outcome will be proper diagnosis and repair and rolling road set up, giving me the best chance I can wish for.... not looking forward to the bill though.
