What's involved in getting a private plate taken off a car and selling it?

You need to fill in a V317 form and send it off with £80 and a valid MOT certificate. I'm sure I've done all mine just by post. You can transfer it or put it on retention. If you put it on retention though, you have to remember to pay £20 a year otherwise you might lose the plate.
They can ask to inspect the vehicle - which they did for one of my plates about 10 years ago (watching the chap put on a hard hat and high viz to open the bonnet and read the vin made me laugh - that said the gas struts were buggered so it was a wiser thing to do than he realised!)

Oops, I forgot to add, whilst they can ask to inspect the vehicle it's very rare and none of my others were inspected.

V317 form is if your transferring a number plate from one vehicle to another. TransferV778 form is for retention. Retention

I have been in the motortrade 30 years, I do not know anything about private plates, never owned one, never had anything to do with transferring them!
Everybody I know has one!
Don't know how I have avoided the subject!
"more money than sense" comes to mind.
My mate who owns a garage who we do allot of work for, has a recovery truck with TOW 1N number plate.
To me it is a nice tilt and slide truck. I would not bother what the plate is...!
I would be more interested if it started up in the morning and did the job!
