Anything with a rubber on it....
I had a Corsa C with new drop links ftted a year ago and when it came to MOT time this year the rubbers were perished to the point where there were splits...I got an advisory.. Suffice to say I wasn't happy that I'd fitted these links last year and the rubbers were gone!
New drop links fitted , so we'llsee how long these last. My MOT guy did say that there was an issue with rubbers of late...Just hope there's no probs with birth control ;D

A neighbour has a yaris its about 14 years old,I advised her about a year and a half ago that the rubber boots on both bottom ball joints were split badly and needed replacing, she never came back to me on it. Serviced the car again the other day and there is no rubber boot left on them and zero grease but still not worn....... maybe cause its a light car and she doesn't do much mileage

I wonder if sales of 'pickle fork' type ball joint splitters have fallen since the change?

What does everyone pay for just the boots and where from ? Local con men round here want £6 each for the bigger ones. Other place up the road sell a pair of TREs for £13 but does't sell the rubbers.

How do you change the just the boots? Do you have to split the joints or does anyone make any that glue together like some CV boot kits? As said, it's a fair bit of work to split them possibly with new split pins just to swap the boot.

The joint has to be split but a good bit of time saved tracking up. Its quite easy to get the boots on with a bit of practice and a little screwdriver.
With new TREs most places won't mention tracking as it means adding a bit to the quote. They might offer tracking once the jobs on the ramp or play the long game and sell em a new pair of tyres.
Trend seems to be fitting slightly bigger boots to get them on quicker and nip them up with mini cable ties rather than the metal clips. Suppose it depends where the car is going after the jobs done.
Bulk boots on ebay seem to be working out at £3 each although they might be cheaper than that. Thats why I was asking who gets what where and how much.

I silicone sealed a couple on a peugeot for one of our regulars who fell victim to a ball joint splitter when he had his clutch replaced somewhere.

Remington,my thoughts entirely. I am used to the French system, the testing stations are franchises ok, but don't do repairs. Still get some that are more relaxed than others but none are seeking repair work. I don't want to stir up a can of worms either, just a view of an old diyer.

Changing rubbers is hard work, I struggle to get the ring-spring-clips on! I will thou, change them, if it is going to cost me a whole wishbone on something expensive. Or it is ball joint on a 4x4 which is going to be a bas##rd to get out. But for a £10 drop link, no way!

Throw the spring clips away, the factors will have strong mini cable ties in stock cos everyone wants to use them instead.
Some places are peddling bigger floppy oversize boots for easier fitting but that causes problems securing them in any worthwhile fashion. A pass is a pass but wouldn't wouldn't want to fit them on your own motor.
IMO a snug boot and mini cable ties is best. Whip round the boot edge with a little blunt screwdriver then give the cable ties a mild pull. Very quick, sealed and secure.
As you say, depends on the variables, if their pockets will stand it quote for full new components, or take it to the extreme and quote for a swap against somthing on the pitch.
Doesn't take many fails to make a swap viable these days, couple of tyres, BJs, set of brakes, top it off with a service and new exhaust............yes madam, a straight swap, nothing to pay, drive away today, your 2006 30k Clio for my 2001 80k Proton Persona...........fit a CD player ? will you swap if I say yes ? come inside, lets get your name on it, theres been a lot of interest in that.
