My pals van has started stalling/won't idle. It had been doing it randomly for a while.
Serviced a week and half ago, it did stall once on me but I had just replaced the fuel filter.
Today it has got a load worse, had a quick listen to it tonight, you can keep it running, with the throttle but it's a bit of a battle. Mate said once driving it isn't down on power in anyway. When it does stall it restarts easily but again you have to keep it running.
It's on 190k BTW.
Can anybody advise on areas to look, will try and scan it when possible.
Thanks.
Didn't have any access to diagnostics tonight, no eml on though.

Sounds like EGR valve staying open, you can temporarily blank it off to confirm.

With a purpose made blanking plate?
Thanks for the reply.

For testing, any old bit of thin plate will do - cut up with a pair of scissors, but yes, it needs shaping, sort of a diamond shape with the corners rounded IIRC. just drop it in behind the seal and nip it up again - should fire up near-instantly and idle normally if that's the cause.

If the blanking of it sorts it out, is it just a case of replacing the egr valve after that?

Really depends on the year
If itβs an old slogger
It may well run fine with it blanked off
All be it with Nox emissions a tad higher and run a bit hotter
Not that youβll actually be able to notice any difference

And they can be murder to get out
If the EGR gets frozen to the alloy housing ie the cooler

I make test blanks out of butchered diet coke cans.

Oh.. Drinking diet coke doing nothing for my wieght loss plan - just prefer taste to normal "fat coke".
Not that I drink many cans of pop - maybe one a week max....
