We are looking at replacing our now old Mondeo ST220 (2004 plate) with something for easier access for the Mrs due to her underlying medical issues. It will be petrol and a manual gearbox preferred and 1-3 years old unless I can get a decent size discount on a new one? (No finance needed.)

Tiguan are everywhere around her (Bentleys lease scheme), big bus for a tiny petrol engine IMO and you’ll pay a premium because they’re rare - people leasing for 1 - 3 years have no fear of constipated dpfs
Sportage
Tucson
But the petrol issue above applies to these too
Edit 400 petrol - 1200 diesel on autotrader search 2018 - 2020
Petrol 217 dsg- 179 manual

Cos I'm good like that How many miles are you doing a week? Did I read somewhere 6000 per year? Remember you had very good service from a VW Golf derv? I know you're worried about dpf's, but if driven proper/hard, Liverpool and back few times a week, good commute you shouldn't have a problem. You'll get p$ssed off fast with the poor economy/performance of any of the above petrol versions.

I have nearly gone over to all VAGS now on the fleet.
Crafter vans
Petrol Golf
VW Passat 2.0 deisel estate car.
1.0 Citigos/UPs for loaners.
I don't think VAG stuff is any better than other makes - but it is easier to repair - buy parts for - get data wiring diagrams for.
There is so many of them in the UK - pattern parts are on the shelf.
As long as you avoid Audi's and flagship models - I think they are a good buy.

The Golf GT TDi 130 (2003) 03 plate I had was a good car but IIRC it didn't have a DPF on it. When I had the Golf I was doing 12-15000 a year on average. I/We only go to the Pool once every couple of months so I can't justify running a diesel. As you are probably are aware my current ST220 isn't the best on fuel 18-20 around town mid twenty's if I go on a run. I haven't done a very long run since we came down to your neck of the woods and that was in 2014.

Yes possibly I'm a badge snob. Volvo XC40 and Tiguan both hold their prices so even second hand they are more expensive than other brands.

Had far more diesel stock. I'll have a peruse. Haven't been their in a few years.

Haven't been their in a few years. Loads of cars, half are pre prep and aren't marked up, valeting bays not in use Saturday PM - staffing issues? If you go get a stocklist from the office as you walk in. Polo GTi was low in coolant so we walked away from that one. Mostly ex BCA stuff. Aston Barclsy are allowing public into their halls

I'd go one step further and suggest that Skoda is the only sensible option with VAG's ; I get much less hassle with these than any of the VW's or Audi's that come through. All the SEAT's are knackered up here, but that may just be the young drivers that have them.
The Skoda's just seem to be better screwed together - I don't know why - but because they are just a tiny bit simpler than their siblings for each class of platform, much more reliable for having a bit of proven technology. They still go wrong, but as Remmington says, bits are plentiful, and the diagnosis is made easier for having good information around.
