Yeah silly money for Scan tools - and they are redundant so quickly (worthless). Next level is dealer stuff - we don't see enuf of one make - this is my stumbling block. Yeah I like Gscan and it is cheap.... I do a bit of online training with "Our Virtual Academy" now and then It's interactive videos with questions and technical theory behind different topics and systems Quite a good system really (It's owned and run by an ex F1 engineer called Ben) They use a G-Scan 2 for any bits where they need to use a scan tool, it looks a neat little tool G-Scan Tab is £895 + Vat www.hickleys.com/diagnostics/gscantab.php(G-Scan 3 is £2250 + Vat G-Scan 2 is £1595 + Vat) They all have the same software - you gotta buy a laptop or cheap Tablet PC to run G-Scan Tab (so super value) G-Scan is really good for Japanese and Korean stuff. I always used to have Carman scan tools here over the years - the G Scan platform replaced it. It is very good for the money and does not "time out" when you stop updating it. I roughly buy a new scan tool for our workshop about every three years. The last one I bought was VCDS Hex-net as an upgrade for VAGCOM. There is no one scan tool solution for a small workshop - there is not.I have always bought into the Bosch KTS platform - but I am beginging to question this - it is expensive and it is not my "goto scanner now" - to be honest - I do like the wifi/bluetooth wireless ones and tend to use these first.. I know Valhalla likes his Autel platform. Garage behind us has one of these - we have borrowed it on a few occasions for re setting obsure service lights - and it seems to be able to do odd ones. On the subject of service light reseting - someone told me this from VDO is really good (VDO make dash boards) www.hickleys.com/diagnostics/vdo_autodiagnos.php £595 + Vat What does Giveusaclue use for a scanner in his workshop? (He is about doing the same things as me). Would be interested in what he bought in. If you want a laugh - all the scan tools - autodata - dealer platforms and the cost of logging onto to dealer systems per hour - we buy into.
I think our biggest friend now is "Googling the fault".

I think our biggest friend now is "Googling the fault". Its an absolute minefield!!! I like to see what our American friends are up to in the field of auto repairs I stumbled across this guy Bernie, he owns a company called ATS and designs and manufactures diag tools for technicians The twist is, he is a very clever tech and still works on cars to develop the tools If you get time have a look, be patient its a little bit left field sometimes and he rattles through the jobs fairly quickly m.youtube.com/user/atstube8/videos

Funnily enough I was just flipping back through old copies of the Car Mechanics mag looking for reviews of tool cabinets (couldnt find any) and there's an in depth article from Aug 2015 on instrument cluster repairs including a visit to ECU Testing.
Turns out my other car is also a common failure!

I browse ebay quite a bit and there are some used bargains to be had if you can borrow a van with a tail lift If you want a brand new one, Beta and Bahco stuff is quite affordable and decent quality if you shop around and they will deliver

You don’t need to use google- the customer will do that for you and tell you how to fix it, all you need to do is fit the high quality eBay parts he supplies for you. Easy really 😁

back again!
so here's a funny one. Its been fine for a couple of weeks, drove to Devon and back, no probs. Been sat outside for a week. Now when I start it, the red immobiliser light stays on. Car starts and drives fine, but hard to ignore that bright red light. Any ideas?? I changed keyfob battery.
