Regards the EGR valve, have done loads of these for sticking/slow operation when the engine is hot.
Does the noise sound top end?

Regards the EGR valve, have done loads of these for sticking/slow operation when the engine is hot. Does the noise sound top end? As I remember it from 2days back, yes, I would have said it was top-end whilst listening just by ear underbonnet. I tried to listen for any signs of piston-slap or connecting-rod small/big-ends, and I'm quite sure it is none of those. I wouldn't completely rule-out a block problem, but it seems unlikely. Time was of the essence whilst I was crying with pain at the horrible noise the poor engine was making, and it broke my heart to run it at all (whilst collecting live data)....
The glowplug adapter kit measure hose turned-up this afternoon in the post, so I hope to get some compression readings across all four cylinders tomorrow, with actual WPS500 readings on each cylinder to overlay. Then maybe a smoke test through the glowplug hole at firing-timing on each cylinder to be absolutely sure, if the compression is down at-all.
Despite the apparence of unburned fuel in cyls 2 & 4 combustion bowl, I couldn't get any indication of mechanical contact to the piston adjacent to the bowls when viewed with the camera, which surprised me a bit. Hence Steve's suggestion of vacuum-pump follower noise is worth re-checking, as it could be that the noise and the poor running are not the same source. I would happily accept that the poor running was down to a wide-open EGR valve, or missing valve head, when running a part-warm idle, if the noise was somewhere else.

Well, work has ground to a halt on most things around the place - Mrs. Valhalla has abandoned me for a week of luxury in Oxfordshire. Which means I have no spare time outside of running both businesses and generally spinning plates.
My last act as a free Man was to make the snap decision to get the Focus undercover, and what better place than my nearly-but-not-quite-completed new workshop extension? Other than the fact that I cannot afford to get any spillage on the floor (paintwork still underway) and that I declared I would "never put modern tat into my new building", it seemed the logical thing to do. I can lift the head off this at my leisure (when I have some leisure) and give the engine a good once-over, without continually pushing the thing in and out of the main workshop. Which is doing my back no favours at the moment.....
As this is a HGF job, I reasoned that it can be done on the floor. If it needs any underneath work, well, the wretched thing will have to be dragged forward onto the 4-poster. I hope not.
