If your car is the 1.3 diesel then these do have a chain and are prone to stretching, even if the car is well serviced. A stretched chain may not be noisy initially as the tensioner will pull some of the slack out. But at lower RPM when oil pressure is lower, the slackness may emerge and cause a problem. On other cars, stretched timing chains do make the Rev counter do weird thanks and throw a fault code. My car had no codes though....

Yes, my car is the 1.3 diesel. The previous owner didn't do much maintenance i think, cause the car smoked horribly for 10 minutes every 60 kilometers or so (when regenerating i assume). After changing the petrol filter the problem magically dissapeared. I had a suspicious fault code "egr excessive" for 2 times when i drove long distances in very low revs, but it didn''t come back. No fault codes about the rev counter. I will see if i have an oil pressure obd2 reading. I am afraid not. I was happy to have a chain, because i thought it was maintenance free. Any idea how to diagnose a stretched chain? the car is drivible, but it takes a bit of the joy away. thnx again!
