It's my sisters car,a 2004 tddi hatch. I looked at it a month ago and said it needed a matrix. Apparently it's been done elsewhere!! Now when's I check this car this morning,I found no circulation at all, header tanks full.no antifreeze at all. Lots of rusty water marks, like when the head gaskets are gone. So I whips out water pump,it's absolutely fine, nothing wrong with.check stat in the kettle,it opens fine. I take off the two bleed pipes that go to header tank and snap off the plastic bit on the stat housing. Both pipes were blocked solid. Got them unblocked, some sort of plastic restricter near the top was clogged. So now i start to get good circulation everywhere except to heater matrix, looking further it's also blocked. I ran the steam cleaner through both ends and did get some black/brown sludge come out. When I phoned her and talked to her hubby,he's paid £100 labour and £60 parts to have a new matrix fitted by a bloke, near where he works!!! Now I heards it's a dash out job to this properly,so looks like he's gona have to pay again!!! Serves him right!!!!
I haven't seen a car with so many faults on one system for a while!!

Sounds like that "replacement" might have simply been "bung a load of K-seal in".

Was a piece of cake in the end, just centre console out,was even easier as dew hurst had done it before me! The end cause was a blocked oil cooler causing lack of heat inside of car,so that's two pipes and an oil cooler definitely, matrix was suspect as there was a lot of crud that was coming out when I was steam cleaning it from under the bonnet! Thanks For everyone's help.
