Become a Plumber they get more respect. and they get paid more and instead of getting covered in oil you may only get covered in water, and that washes off easily.

Are you in uk or europe or usa or other?
in uk, i think you will get universal advice to find another trade, not so sure about the other countries.
in uk though, i would say become a plasterer. Few tools, highly sought after, good money and never ending future of work.
and no premises needed, that has to be the major cost/problem/expense/question any mechanic has to cover before doing any work

You don't mention where you are in the World and also how old you are ie still at school or not . Unless you can get a good apprenticeship with a manufacturer or good garage I would advise thinking about another trade as has been mentioned.Plumbing with gas safe registration you'll never be short of work.

If you really want to become a mechanic, do it for yourself. These guys all saying " be a plumber " etc doesn't exactly answer your question. If your into it, being a mechanic is amazing and if you play the game right you can earn a top load of cash. First get yourself an apprenticeship at a garage, I would advise an independent garage rather than a dealer, you will 100% learn a lot more. Obviously your going to have to have your own tools, but nowadays you can buy small roll cabs with tools in them which you would need to start at around £900. Then join a college or training group to complete your training, this is only an option because ultimately after 4 years or more at a garage you are known as time served. After these steps your on your way, just stay keen and keep learning, and trust me, you will always be learning no matter how long your in this trade. If you need any advice on how to get started just let me know, or if you run into problems with cars etc. Good luck man I hope you do what you actually want to do, at the end of it all its your life and you only live one time, do what you want to do. Hope this helps !

Beardy
I stand by my statement, vehicles have got harder never met any one who has made good money out of the motor trade, been promised big bucks with promises of certified mechanics will only be able to work on cars....still waiting, that with massive investment in tools with little reward constantly having to achieve targets with bonus.
Plumbers little investment in tools pipe slice blowtorch pipe grips push fit fittings rusty transit van no cast iron baths to lug up stairs never turn up charge a fortune when they do, I know more plumbers and builders who have earned big bucks.
Rant over
