What year is the Vivaro ? I had some dealings with Renault Traffic /Opel Vivaro / Nissan Primastar around 2004 to 2006 . They all had the same 1.9 dci engine and also the gearboxes mostly the same , 5 or 6 speed ( engine and box also used in Renault Laguna ) One gearbox failed because the inner boot on the nearside failed and it lost most of its oil . Also the oil level could not be checked in the usual way - the way suggested was drain the box and then refill it with the specified amount (varying from 2.7 to 3.2L). When I was reading up on them a few years back there were reports of people having their vans serviced - and following the drive home found gear oil all over the engine bay ; oil level too high using the 'traditional' method of filling until oil began to run out . Renault apparently use a tool which looks like a piece of bent wire to check level. I also used to get the gear oil from Renault as no one else seemed to have one with the correct spec - and gearbox failures were common enough . If yours is newer then the above probably doesn't apply .

well not much info there cv gaiter holding gearbox oil? what rubbish thers a gearbox! The CV gaiter doesn't hold *all* the oil, it simply holds it in the gearbox. Rubber gaiter splits = bye bye gearbox oil = bye bye gearbox

There's been a roaring trade for years with the top-hose adapter bleed plug on the 300Tdi Landrover engine; the original plastic one lets go all the time once it has been used a couple of times, and nobody bothers to replace them......serious head gasket problems then loom, as the water pump runs high and dry on these.......unless someone is smart enough to put an aftermarket brass plug in its place, after which it truly is fit-for-purpose and no more problems.

well not much info there cv gaiter holding gearbox oil? what rubbish thers a gearbox! It's far from a new design by Renault...The Vauxhall Vivaro has a Renault engine..The van is a Renault Trafic basically.. I remember as far back as the 80's they had this design...Renault 21 is one that I remember... Anyway, the gearbox filler is the least of your worries... Gearinkages are pants..Gearboxes are weak...Mafs go, egrs go..wiring faults..injectors..You name it, they are just shite...Not bad to drive when they are running though!

Sometimes those inner joint boots fail because the diff is floating all over the place.
So the Inner boot fails follows by the dreaded moaning duff diff.....

I spent quite a while trying to sort out a 2005 Renault Traffic - wouldn't start when owner returned to it at a filling station. Changed MAF , EGR , CAS , cam sensor and other parts following scans by 2 different operators - but no joy. Never managed to get it going (sold on as non runner eventually) but did a lot of 'research' and one bit of info really described how bad a wiring problem could be : the owner decided to strip the injector loom from injectors back to ECU , took 7 hours and found many breaks. A big factor in the life of the gearboxes apparently was regular oil changes (50K mls ) and using the correct oil. I knew of one van which had 225K done on the original box with oil changed at every 50K .

I look after one of these(have done from new) for a friend, its a 2007 & its now on 215,000 miles & i change the gearbox oil every 50k & other than the box having to come out as the clutch slave cyl failed at 150,000 miles the box has never been touched or had a problem. other than regular servicing & a pas pump & a few sets of discs & pads & a couple of ball joints & track rod ends this van hasnt had any major problems, its getting replaced in sept this year when the new nissan version comes out.Just shows if you look after these vans they can do big miles without major problems.
