Yes that car is supported on breeze blocks, many of them, stacked flat and not that far off the ground. Don't worry I have no need to go under it and it's very secure. And it's not from the vacuum, it's the pole from our old TV aerial . That's the problem with breaking cars, people always want to buy the useful stuff like bonnet stays, before you're ready.

Never heard of shimming steering rack This won't even be possible on the vast majority of racks I'd expect its wear in the track arms/ball joint You may well be right Karl..... How times have changed....Guess I'm a dinosaur..... Just out of curiosity then, hands up anyone having shimmed top or bottom ball joints on a Mini? Mini Allegro Top swivel Marina, all a joy to do. and shimming racks, diffs and greasing racks

Haven't shimmed a rack since I was an apprentice, and even then only at college. Never done one in the workshop.

Ive shimmed loads of mini ball joints, not hard to do although our ones dont do enough miles to wear them out so havent needed doing in ages,i keep a couple of kits and loads of shims though, i find they last longer if you re use the old pin and cup if possible as they wear together to the same shape, some people lap them together with valve grinding paste but ive never bothered.

I used to do my Allegro bottom balljoint every 6months. I think it was the same part number as Mini, just twice the weight on it - no wonder they wore-out...

Top and bottom were different sizes if I remember and one had a spring that may have been on a Allegro hub .

I think you are right about the spring on the Allegro hub - it's been a long time now (30years). If memory serves me correctly, there are thrust springs on both top and bottom joints, to bias a thrust pad against the ball of the pin? I cannot remember how this reacted with the shimming of the joint, which was done with a straightforward endfloat measurement - something like 3thou comes to mind, or near-to-nothing....
Something I remember the Allegro having was a serviceable steering rack. You could shim the pinion float, and you could also shim the damper piece. I think I did the former, to get some slack out of the system, but not the damper (being the youth I was..)

So I got round to fitting the new steering boot. I got the proper clips with it, then realised I didn't have the tool to tighten it and wasn't sure I'd manage it with just pliers, so bog standard Cowboy ties will do after all, that's what I took off. I managed to do it by splitting the track rod end (without damaging the boot) and pulled the boot over the ball joint so I didn't need to interfere with the tracking, which was just as well as I don't think the TRE was looking like it wanted to move anyway  No sign of any play at all, so no idea what last years advisory was all about ??

I don't see how you managed to change the rack gator without removing the TRE
