Hi guys im hoping someone can help me here, i have a fiat punto mk2 diesel 1.9 2002 model. Ive noticed today the passenger footwell is saturated in water, its a slippery oily feel and slightly bubbly, first thought was screenwash but dont know how that would be possible as its flooded quite bad, second point to make is the firewall and door seals are bone dry so i followed the water on the carpet to the passenger vent on the console so i put my fingers in and they came out wet, so i took the vent and centre console out and revealed the heater blower vents which were dry but on the bottom had a pool of green water so i thought coolant, i checked the coolant and it was minimum level so i topped it up, i noticed with the engine hot the expansion cap had no pressure built up so dont know if thats a clue but anyway the heaters come on and they work properly with no issues and the car doesnt overheat but i also felt up inside the centre console and thats also dry so im frankly stumped and cannot find the source of the leak, any help much appreciated thanks

Greenish black the coolant was and the car doesnt have air conditioning its just bog standard hot and cold fan blowers which do get hot nice and quick

Sounds like heater matrix or associated pipe work then, I think on a car of that age I would be tempted to whack some K seal in it.

Yeah if its leaking it wants replacing, or you could try a product to seal it like Kseal, you tip it into the coolant.

If he's going to bodge it/ temporary repair
It'll be better to bypass the heater core in my opinion

In my opinion the water in the footwell equates to a jug being tipped onto the carpet and the coolant hasent lost that much water i used quarter of a jug to top it up, the water in the carpet has an oily slippery feel but no smell and it is kind of like soapy water when u press down on it although as i said theres a pool gathered in the centre console which is green and the nuts are covered in like a limescale powder as if the water has been there a while, so confusing

Well i like to fix things myself and since ive never dealt with heating system before so i was hoping someone could diagnose ehat my issue is so i can find the source and stop it or replace the parts, the heating system works fine so does the car and seals but if its as easy as a hose rupture or a hose pulled free from the matrix at least i can find it and plug it etc, water in the passenger footwell is a symptom a mechanic would know about lol especially the details ive given to locate the source and the clues i found etc etc

Well if u read my post you will see that i posted the passenger carpet is saturated with an oily feeling water with slight shampoo bubbles in it almost like a mix of washer fluid, but when i found the source behind the centre console vents i found a pool of green fluid, im not saying it is the source but either way ive found lots of water and then a pool of green water, it might not be related but then i decided to investigate further by checking the firewall which is dry and then checked the coolant which was at minimum level and i took some water out of the tank to see what colour it was to compare it to the liquid in the vent and it was greenish black so that makes me think maybe its that leaking but im not a mechanic so im just making investigative assumptions on what it may be, anyway as of today ive filled up the tank and im monitoring the levels. Theres no overheating and no loss of heat from blowers but still shit loads of film feeling water in the footwell and i have no way of drying it out to see if its getting worse or not. Is this enough info?

No way of drying it out you say....
Lift the carpet and use a sponge and a rag...
I would suggest tasting your finger to find out if it's coolant, but it can cause brain damage!

Enough info to say that you need to get a coolant pressure-tester kit onto the expansion bottle. This will tell you, a) if the coolant is disappearing somewhere, just by the pressure decaying during test, and b) if you're really lucky, you will be able to see from behind the dash if your puddle of green fluid is getting bigger or not.
Don't assume that the coolant drop at the expansion tank equates to what's in your footwell, not least if you haven't had the car for long. Footwells tend to accumulate coolant over the months....and it's easier to top-up the coolant than fix the problem. Also, your cooling system might be full of gas, not venting it back to the expansion bottle.
If your expansion bottle coolant is black, you need to get a seriously good check done of the cooling system. You either have a lot of rubber breaking-up in there, or you have oil.....

Drain channels below the wiper scuttle clog on these and cause water ingress into the car. Then again, unless it's been raining coolant lately then this isn't your problem
