Anyone know what year Catalytic converters were required?
I've got a 1993 BMW e30 with a Cat, I need a new back box but the down-pipes have seen better days too. So I was looking into new stainless steel systems throughout but it makes it a darn site more expensive including the Cat in the middle. As this was introduced during the production life of the car earlier ones don't require a cat so systems with and without are available. But I can't seem to find a definitive answer, I've got info suggesting 92-94.

1992 - K plate onwards, but there was some dispensation for old stock without cats to be registered and sold afterwards and tested to non cat standards.

The last post is the most important
If an exact match can't be found its a non cat test

Thanks guys, look's like the cat has to stay, if only I'd bought an earlier one ;-)

Mine was coming up to 100,000 miles.....I changed the chain and sprockets before any major disaster ensued....... Then the donut coupling broke at the gearbox, then the exhaust went....decided to get rid....as it was starting to cost serious money...was a sad day...but I got good money for it against a P plate 2.0 l petrol Mondy.....

On the plus side, if you do need a new cat, at least at that age it doesn't have to be a type approved, so should be a bit cheaper.

Oli The law changed on the 13th August 2009 making it illegal in the UK to fit a non-type approved catalytic converter to a petrol vehicle registered at any date from 1st March 2001. The date is in line with the introduction of the ‘Y’ registration plate so like Oli mentioned yours is registered prior to that date.
