2005 Renault Modus 1.4 16v,slight misfire when accelerating, codes seem to point to a coil playing up,i changed the plugs as matter of course which did help a little but not total cure,it has the pencil type coils and i changed them around which inturn made it run worse for some reason but at least i seem to be on the right track,so put back to where they were originally,i only have a basic code reading scanner but reckon on either No4 or No3 coil my bet is on No3 as 1 and 4 seem a lot newer than the other two, will get a coil in morning as light has beat me,but any input as to whether i'm on the right track would be appreciated. I have also checked for the chaffed wire in loom that does affect these cars.

Don't these turn the injector off if a misfire is detected, did you clear the fault after you swapped the coils around? if not that would explain why it ran worse afterwards

not sure about injector cut off,but trawling some other forums if coil not fault i could be looking at injector fault,i did initially clear codes, but even after the swap and reswap the codes haven't come back, although i only gave a short run to feel for the lumpy running as i swapped things around, there was never a mil light to begin with either?.

Are these like some French cars where no 1 cylinder is on gearbox end?? . Also do these injectors not work in pairs? I had a problem once on a renault and could only locate faulty coil by disconnecting the injectors one at a time. That's when I realised that no 2 cylinder was actually where I thought no 3 was,if you know what I mean.

Yes only french cars run from gearbox, don't ask why. Problem sorted, bought a pencil coil first thing this morning and changed the suspected number three coil and all is well, wasn't the most scientific approach but worked this time, cheers guy's

Lol,i was going down that route but thought to myself buy one and see how it goes,i am going to replace the other one as it probably hasn't got long to go either,my diagnosis was from what i gleaned from the net from people with the same codes ,but always ask on here to be sure as usually get the right info.and yes i am a lucky s.o.b

Aren't Renault cyclinders numbered in reverse to the norm, i.e. number 1 is at the gearbox rather than the cambelt end ?

Yep,there renaults, nothing simple. If you don't have good diagnostic equipment then the simplest way to find which cylinder is misfiring is to pull plug from injectors one at a time. I'm sure some on here will frown on this but it works

Yeah that works, I usually unbolt coils and lift one at a time to see which one ain't working!
