Slightly off topic but it would be really interesting to get an idea of reliability vs age for vehicles. Both new vs older and older cars when they were new.
I think most of the problems with older cars are due to them not being serviced properly - think how thorough a main dealer service of a three year old vehicle is compared to a budget oil change on a 15 year old car (most are lucky to get that).
I think IF they were well maintained then the chances of a break down in a vehicle of say 15 -25 years old (I.e complete let down requiring RAC etc) wouldn't be that much worse than a newer one. But you will inevitably have more parts that will need replacing as they wear out and the key is being aware and mechanically minded so you notice them and replace them as they wear before they let you down.

In theory an older car 15/20 years old which has been serviced well and together with maintenance
Should be just as reliable as a newer car if not more so

Still run a 19 year old Astra, it's coming up to 156k and still runs fine. In my 14 years of ownership it's refused to start twice - both times it was parked up and when returning the battery had died. Still on the original plug leads, clutch and alternator.
All I really do is keep the oil changed at 6-8k and change the cambelt at 40k or less.
I think the trouble now is we have become a mechanically inept generation who have little interest in anything practical, combined with the modern car's intolerance of neglect.

How about covering half of your radiator in foil? I used to use foil on our old fiesta in winter and it helped it a lot. Cover half first and if that's not enough cover 3 quarters.
I own a 2001 Toyota corolla and have had it 6 years and touch wood it has never let me down rain, snow or shine so I will continue to run it until it packs in. Change the oil and filter regularly like every 6 months like I do and use decent branded oil and also a good brand of oil filter if you want your car to last and I bet you it will.
I told a lad at work to put some oil in his punto as their was none showing on the dipstick and also that oil is cheaper then another car. His reply was f**k it be rate. So there you go in his opinion metal on metal is the best lubricant LOL!
