Hi guys I run an older type Land Rover engine...200tdi 1993 vintage,
I alway used to get my a/f for free from work....green stuff....I dont know what type is is apart from its used in big truck engines,
I cant get it anymore and when I looked into the correct type for it on the Halfords web site it say use Silicate anti freeze is what I need...not the OAT stuff,
My question...is Silicate a/f green and only green and is silicate the old school a/f that we used years ago...well pre 90s anyway...its just that I never remember it being called silicate a/f and I started driving over 40 years ago.
Nick.

Nick. The "silicates" are corrosion inhabitants Most Anti freeze is still Ethylene glycol , the oat is still E G based I believe, but with additional components to extend life ( fords red/orange oat has a life of 10 years)

And just to add my 2p.. Most anti- freeze is mono-ethylene glycol based or tri-ethylene glycol based... The additives are just corrosion inhibitors irrespective of colour...

I added some of the recommended OAT antifreeze to a newish Vauxhall to boost the strength and a short while later noticed a large gloopy mess in the expansion bottle - obviously it reacted in some way so now when using different brands I always flush the system first.
