Our engine of our c5 estate recently blew up 2 months after our 1 year warranty ran out. ( bought last year for£9000 from dealers, it had only done 16000 miles). The citroen garage was not sure why it had but we paid for a new engine at the cost of 5000£ in total. A few days later the egr valve was blocked and the car broke down again...the AA man said they should have cleaned it out when new engine was put in but they are asking us for another 600£ to fix it...do you think they should have cleaned out the valve or are we just unlucky with a separate problem...any ideas would be great. thanks emily

And age of the vehicle? What was the current mileage when the engine failed ? Did the engine Rev on its own to maximum rpm ? Or did the turbocharger seize ? As if there's contaminated oil /metallic swarf this means both need to be replaced normally The egr valve would have been removed from the failed engine and fitted to the new engine As typically a new engine will come supplied " bare" Unless it was heavily sooted up it wouldn't necessarily have been cleaned

As you have just spent ££££ I'd have thought the garage would have replaced the engine would have offered to replace at a discounted rate
I think to regain any money back from the original dealer who sold you the vehicle
You'd need to have the engine examined independently, and it would have to be proved engine was faulty at time of sale ? Which is going to be difficult to prove
Have you got any service history with the vehicle ?
Correct intervals and oil used ?

Thanks for your help Karl's .....The car had done under 50,000 when it happened, the turbo went as originally the AA man thought it would just be this that had to be replaced but it was the whole engine. I was just checking that if that was the case should they not have looked to clear out the oil from the blow up, in the valve or in this situation does the ear valve not need to be looked at. We have full service history etc many thanks

What Karl was getting at, is that the EGR is a bolt on extra bit to the engine.
It would be ideal to clean it before refitting but not essential at that mileage.
But who fitted the new engine should be answering why the new set up has broken down within a few days of a new engine fitting, and it would be worthwhile asking them for a detailed explanation, that you could then re present here for us to offer a proper opinion on.

Thanks, they said it is just bad luck that the egr has failed just a few days after new engine was fitted and that they didn't need to clean this as part of the first job...which is beginning to look correct...Its just because I heard from another mechanic and the AA man that when the engine blew up it could have leaked oil into valve and this should have been checked. I'm afraid I don't have a clue about these things which is why I thought would check . many thanks for your time.

It's unlikely oil got into the EGR valve , they normally soot up due to there working environment Which is unavoidable With the service history it's important to have this engine correctly serviced at the right mileage I can't stress how important correct oil changes are on this engine ! At 50,000 miles I'd want 5 stamps in the book This Diesel engine isn't like diesels of old , which where agriculture and could suffer abuse and missed oil changes

Was the turbocharger replaced together with the engine ?
