hes complaining of heater not getting hot. using coolant,no external leaks. another garage has block tested it with that colour changing liquid and confirmed presence of exhaust gases in coolant. i could see bubbles floating up into expansion tank. hes authorised me to do the head gasket. my mechanic went to pull the head off and found evidence of headgasket having been done already, heads been skimmed. oil cooler and oil filter looks new as well. any ideas anyone?

Why would they change a head gasket for an egr cooler leak ? easy enough to test even without kit , hardly a specialist needed for that!

Human error I guess, not that that could happen to some of us.

The 2.0 engine is prone to heads cracking I do believe.
I have a 55 A4 which is proper smoky/greedy on coolant in bits at the mo. Have had head tested and confirmed as cracked.
Repair cost is ££££££££££
