I have to change the engine in my niece's 2003 Avensis 1.6 VVTi ( E3Z T52?) - broken chain . It was suggested to me that the engine can be removed upwards - but having done some dismantling I am beginning to wonder if this is possible ; doesn't appear to be much space to move engine away from gearbox ? Any suggestions welcome - will engine come up or should engine and box be lowered ?

Have no idea , but in most cases it's easier to remove from below

Done a similar but older big engined Corolla, took that out through the top with gearbox attached, and split them on the floor

Thanks for replies . That seems a good idea rhubarb- engine and box taken up together ; space seems very tight for splitting them in engine bay . Doing it on Monday when replacement engine arrives

The lads here have done a few of them, I can't remember exactly but if you haven't done it yet give me a call and I'll get him to fill you in.
