My Dad is bored with his current focus and has now spotted a 2004 X-Trail, 2.2 dci, 120k miles 9 service stamps etc. Just wondering if anybody has had much to do with these? I can't remember doing much to them other than MOT's service, general repairs and a couple of aux belts. I've looked and its on a timing chain, I presume it will be on a dmf too Any input appreciated.

The first thing to do is find out if that's a Renault or a Nissan engine. The Renault is prone to little hissy fits!!!
(I suspect it's a Nissan unit because 2.2 is a size that seems to fit Japanese taxation laws)

ECU and injector trouble is not unheard of so check whether the engine idles properly and make sure that it pulls smoothly across the rev range. There was a recall for rusty fuel tank filler neck. Check VOSA recalls. Some drivers may find visibility problematic due large A pillars.

Pumps as such rearly ever give trouble. Had this years back where a main dealer said pump was gone and quoted 1600 at that time to do it. A friend who worked in nissan said it was just a switch or valve on side of pump that always went. He replaced it for a few quid and worked fine ever since. He said many dealers just replaced pump and because this part came as part of the new pump it solved the problem ,but what a waste of money.

I try telling my Dad about modern diesels etc, he only does 3-4k a year at the minute.

I try telling my Dad about modern diesels etc, he only does 3-4k a year at the minute. I would go with Macs recommendation for the petrol with only doing 3-4k a year. A decent example should be cheaper to buy than a diesel. I don't know your Dads budget but here's an example what a decent one would cost from a reputable Trader. 2004 04 reg NISSAN X-TRAIL 2.5 16v Sport 5dr Manual 4x4 Petrol with 56k on the clock £4495
