Our Focus is leaking oil, leaving spots on the drive, had a quick glance underside and the Sump is quite thick with oil at the rear.... Not had a chance to get a closer look or jack it up etc etc, any common points I should check ?

Driveshaft oil seal ( had a batch of inferior seals installed )
Can you take a photo ?
If not get a mirror looking from above the engine and look down the back for any signs of leaks
Not normal for any leaks

if it was driveshaft seal, it would be loosing gear oil wouldnt it MrB ? this is engine oil as the level is dropping. perhaps it could be the sump plug washer. it hasnt had oil service for four years.....

Four years is a flash in the pan, compared to the focus it has replaced, it never saw an oil/filter change since the day they bought it in 2003, as far as i know, just a constant loss and replenishment job, it was run on 10/40 (topping up) for a long time at the advice of her local Halfords, until it either leaked out or got burnt off. I wasnt involved with it I have to say, I was told by her husband that he looks after his cars so not to worry. he looked after both their cars so well, they both failed emissions dramatically and have been scrapped this year!!!!.

as an after note, oil service done, cannot find an engine oil leak anywhere, Except the Oil filter wasnt as tight as it could have been and had corroded at the bottom and was oily, is it feasible that it could have become pourous . Replaced air filter while i was at it, not done the pollen filter as the filter cover thing is in a right mess so thats a job for another day. Plugs checked and re-gapped 1.1 mm, they all were in good order no oil deposits etc etc, As the plugs were in good nick is this a good indicator that the engine isnt burning oil ?
