Got a 2003 Yaris with the 1.3 vvt engine. Belt was squealing so upon fitting a new one discovered water pump bearings had collapsed. So new water pump and belt fitted, but still squealing and chirping, especially on startup. I've tensioned as tight as I'm comfortable with but no improvement. Everything looks aligned. Any ideas please?

Alternator belt slightly loose or one of them is very dry hence the squeak. Try spraying some WD40 on the belts one at a time to eliminate them with the engine on tickover.

It was an FAI belt but did look at bit old stock. No noise wih a squirt of Wd40 but that soon wears off. I'll give it another week and maybe I'll have to get another belt.

or worn sprocket(s) - the V's in the belt should not get to the bottom of the groove or it chirps, but worn sprockets and new belts can allow this to happen. My just wear off in time - had this on my old Astra once and it took 3 months but shut up in the end.
Above advice was given to me by someone on here so can't take any credit!

Hi, yes Sorted I think you could be right about the Vs sitting too deep in the grooves (it's a wide 5 ribbed type, not the really old fashioned single). I seem to remember the last belt I bought was virtually flat which would have eliminated this problem.

Karl, i meant the multiple V's in the ribbed belt, not an old V-belt. Although I do have a couple of them on my Stag - and my lawnmower!

How about a bit of silicon spray? It seems to plump up hard dry rubber and make it..well, more rubbery...

The yellow crayon used for marking out corrosion on mot shuts noisey belts up a treat and last ages, carefully press the crayon against the ribs of the belt with the engine running, you will soon hear it quieten down.

I know someone who lost there finger doing something similar ! He would use a bit of sandpaper to take the shine off a squealing belt And said he'd dropped a bolt , but we don't believe him LOL

So should we be advising the belt manufacturers to "yellow Chalk" coat their rib belts from now on
