Got a friend with a 2005 Focus (Mk 2) with a possible leaking heater matrix, are they a big job, dashboard out etc? Any tips? Haven't seen the car but someone mentioned it could be a joint, do these give trouble? Thanks in advance.

Dash out , drain a/c , drain coolant , cut pipes , joint new , refit reverse , road test..
Not known for leaking , but also not unheard off. Anything is possible of course being 10 years old
Book time is around 4 hours
But I'd allow about 5 1/2

Thanks Karl, if it needs a matrix then it's a job for someone else Is there a chance it might be a o ring on the pipes and are they accessible?

Have seen the Aircon drain leaking into the footwell on one of these.

Have seen the Aircon drain leaking into the footwell on one of these. Yes the water drain tube can leak (between heater box )

No O ring as such unless it's been done before

On my one the air con drain tube was prevented from draining by the exhaust heat shield in the tunnel. You wouldn't believe how much water the carpets and foam underneath had soaked up because of it. A slight bit of reshaping of heat shield sorted it.

Cutting a hole in the heat shield was an official fix

Top info, thanks. Having a look in a couple of days so will hopefully see where it's leaking.

Had a look and by the clutch pedal there's a join which is leaking where the matrix pipes connect to the bulkhead ones.
The plastic clip which holds them together is pretty loose so presumably the joint needs separating and remaking with a new seal.
Is it possible to pull the 2 pipes which go through the bulkhead away from the matrix pipes to allow clearance?

The trouble being you'll still need to remove dash to remove/loosen the heater core

You would think that Ford could have come up with a better design than a single o ring and a flimsy plastic clip to prevent the entire cooling system from spraying all over your feet.
I managed to pull the header pipes through the bulkhead enough to seperate them from the matrix. Inserted short length of hose and rejoined the pipes with jubilee clips. Not easy laying under the dash in a pool of coolant but worth the effort.
