Hi I am thinking about changing my car and go for something year 2011 and thinking about either of the 2 above. I want Diesel and Automatic. I currently drive a 2007 BMW520D M Sport (E60) and before that had a 2001 E200 (W210) Kompressor petrol and have been very happy with both cars.
I have been told that E class (W212) is far superior to BMW in that year (2011) and if going for the E class I should go for the E350 as it has low tax due to emissions and also has far better mpg. Does this stack up?
I would appreciate any opinions on this.
Thanks MFK

Head-to-head test I personally would throw the Audi A6 into the pot as well lovely motor IMO. Of the two you mention it would be the three pointed star.

Many thanks for the head to head. I need to drive both and see what I really like. Any thoughts on engine reliability between the Merc W212 engine and the BMW (not sure what engine the 2011 model has). Thanks again

Not sure which engine you have at the moment because 2007 was roughly when they changed from the M47 to the N47.
The M47 had the famous swirl flaps but that was fairly minor compared to what came next.
About 2007 the N47 engine came along. It had the timing chain at the back (clutch end) of the engine. the chains could break which was an engine-out job and could cost anything from £2,500 to £6,000.
They claimed to have fixed the problem in 2009 but there were still some issues. Mainly the problem was reduced from broken chains to faulty guides. However they still get an occasional breakage.
Sometime around 2011 they seem to have released a new engine called the N47N but I can't find any info about that.
My private opinion is that a lot of the problem is caused by the long service interval, 20k miles /2 years. I always service mine every 10k / 1 year.

Used BMW/Merc versus the Ford Focus 1.6 Studio, undoubtedly a better long term prospect than either of those teutonic trumpers.........Nearly £2k finance contribution on Ford credit. Doc fees are £10 up front and £10 on the end making for a dream quick settlement figure with the interest rebate. Folk are driving off in brand new unregistered UK maindealer supplied cars for around £11k.......compare that with a visit to the VW showroom and new Golf enquiry . Theres absolutely no reason to pay more for a former fleet example from a used car supermarket thats been first registered outside europe in the channel islands showing 2 former keepers and early oil swallowing signs that it lived at 6000rpm....... The spec includes 3 year warranty, robust 1600 zetec engine, remote locks, electric windows, air-con, RS-esque alloys and a bundle of other features that would probably interest other people more than they do me. its upside all the way...........ROLL UP ! ROLL UP !

I agree it is all about the oil and filter changes. I also do mine at 10,000 miles which in my case is about every 8 months. When you speak to any of the auto gearbox specialist they also firmly believe in changing the oil even though it is claimed to be sealed for life. I'm not sure what engine number is in mine but it is the older one. The one that came after mine (2008 onwards) had lower emissions, lower tax and better mpg).
