Wifeys '99 Astra 1.6 Auto approx 85k, gradually developed a knocking at slow speed on front. Sounds to be in time with wheel rotation, braking changes the pitch slightly but doesn't stop it, driving in circles doesn't show up the usual driveshaft issues. Wheel bearings and joints all feel fine on inspection with wheels off floor, but there is a fair bit of backlash in diff and it seems more noisy than usual turning NS wheel back and forth.
Are these a weak spot at all, assuming it shares oil with auto box which is full, clean and red and smells fine.
Guess drive it till it dies then look for second hand or scrap it? Thanks

I've had a couple of these auto boxes go to 200k, but one failed at 'only' 140k, refusing to change gear properly.
Never head of one knocking although I suppose it could be possible. Does slipping into neutral on the move change the noise?

No coasting in neutral still same, only does it when hot after a run.
Passed MOT with no advisories yesterday. Think I'll run it 'till it gets worse and go from there - even if needed looks like 'boxes are aplenty on the bay with low miles too so if I have to swap a box that's fine - as long as i am convinced that's what it is!
