I will have a look at the top end. I'm almost concerned it's not noisy enough yet to make any wear obvious though. It's a '56 Galaxy, you've helped me many a time with it in the past Karl, it's been a money pit! DMF was £1400, EGR £700, turbo £2300 (don't ask - the garage originally diagnosed a cracked piston and didn't realise it was just the turbo until the head was already off). I've no doubt the injectors will want doing some day as they are still originals at 120k. A remanufactured unit from Ivor Searle is £1611+VAT, but adding on all the necessary sundries and a flywheel which is chattering away albeit quietly (only 45k since the last one!) etc etc and I can't see it being viable unless it's just a camshaft bearing or similar. So pissed off!! The car is otherwise a minter, nearly new Michellins, Aircon repaired earlier this year, 12 and a half months MOT etc. It'll probably end up on eBay for someone else to resolve.

Sump off and check the pick up and oil pump? JP, Are you questioning oil pressure? Just thinking aloud...., Could he just connect a pressure gauge in place of the oil warning light to check?

Just heard you video clip , in my opinion sounds like bottom end. You could I remove cam cover for inspection and maybe check valve clearances for a laugh
Does it smoke ?
Engine timing check
Oil pressure check
Compression test
These are all things a garage may want to check before pulling engine apart. of course all this takes time and of course money
In reality to remove and strip down is going to be around 10 hours
Some of which time could go towards replacement engine
How much would you expect to get for it ( if engine was running correctly) ?
Could go s/h but beware of change of fuel pump drive from chain to belt in around 2008
Also injectors , EGR etc will be at slightly different calibrations dependant on age.
How much would you want for it as it stands
May cost you more to trade in
Difficult decisions

Sump off and check the pick up and oil pump? JP, Are you questioning oil pressure? Just thinking aloud...., Could he just connect a pressure gauge in place of the oil warning light to check? Another forum, another make of car, new performance cams fitted with ebay tappets, after a few 1Ks he got a noise form the top end, replaced the tappets with INA made ones, again after a few 1Ks the tapping returned after 82 degrees reached on the oil temp. Now considering OE tappets costing £30 each he removed the sump and found several oil pump bolts loose. Sump removal on a transverse engine is usually an easy job for a DIYer? The engine mentioned has had a fair amount of work and could have bits of sealant blocking the pick up?

JP, Yup point taken....what we dont know is what work had been carried out on the engine... Trying to suggest the simpler basic things...

Thanks everyone.
It seems to drive perfect still despite being blo*dy noisy. Sound does seem to be coming from high up, but it's guesswork until torn down. No smoke or oil usage.
On a good day in running order I reckon it's a £4000-£4500 car.
If I can get aomewhere close to £1500 as it stands I think I'll let it go as is. I can't see that it's worth putting an engine in to be honest.
It had turbo and head off 20k miles ago so I'll doubt it's related to that work. Oil pressure light has always gone off quickly and still does. Oil seems spotless and is changed for the correct stuff frequently.
I'll see if sump off is doable on the drive.
Even if I can repair it reasonably cheaply we've decided it's going. Looking to buy a petrol FRV.
