I remember when my cousin had a Mk2 Astra GTE 16v a good few years ago, genuine Vauxhall pads were considered the best - and they were - he once tried a different brand and the fade during enthusiastic braking was dangerous. Although driving a Cavalier diesel I wouldn't have thought that would be an issue Last time I went to the dealers he wouldn't give me trade on them and they were expensive. They do fade on the cav, not so much with the mintex but it's a heavy front end and drums on the back. The mintex are good but I couldn't stop them squealing even after messing with them a few times and those special shim kits you can get for them were pretty pricy. Saying that, I'll pop into the dealers next week, see what he says

Upgrade to SRi / GSi spec? Providing you have clearance for them with the wheels you're running?

Oi,18 months ago when I did a rear cylinder summats up at the back though on one side, spent ages yesterday adjusting the shoes up but couldn't get the handbrake the same on both sides. Cable is only 18 months old. Dodgy factor shoes I think, cheap and lined with concrete and metal. Remember having troubles when I replaced them. They weren't too bad considering I hadn't touched them for 18 months, a bit dry on the one side causing noise but no leaky cylinders. I replace my fluid regular

Brake fade on an old cavalier diesel ,what is it 75/80 bhp, It's not just horsepower that fades brakes, its weight vs speed. Stick any car on some of the steep (and I mean steep) hills of the South Wales valleys and you'll easily cook brakes that aren't up to scratch.
